National Clay Week Open Studio (NCWOS) is a nationwide event that celebrates clay, community and creativity. Join us on the weekend of October 11 – 13, 2019 for a celebration of clay in all 50 states! Studios all over the country will open their doors for demonstrations, lectures, exhibitions.

As a part of NCW 2019 we are going to host a nation wide open studio event. This event is based off the project that The Australian Ceramics Association has been doing for years. NCW will assist you with support materials, advertising, and graphics to help you promote your event. To help offset the cost of these materials we ask that all participants pay a small fee.
This year, in expanding Open Studio, it is our goal to reach out to different communities and share the joy we find working with clay. We would love to have you or your studio participate again this year, by holding a sale, a community day, a lecture, or any other clay related activity. You are welcome to invite other artists to your studio to help host the event but our goal is to reach the public outside of our normal clay community. Building on your input we have created a press packet with a logo/signage, a press release to send to your local media outlet and a few other information sheets to help with the process.

NCECA’s 54th annual conference in Richmond will explore ways that ceramic artists are charting new pathways from the complex meanings of our interwoven histories. NCECA is particularly interested in presenting programming that enriches the theme of this conference, MULTIVALENT: Clay, Mindfulness and Memory. Ceramic art’s diversity of expression and continuous invention generates affinities that extend human imagination. NCECA’s 54th annual conference will explore ways that ceramic artists are charting new pathways from the complex meanings of our interwoven histories.
2020 NCECA EMERGING ARTISTS DEADLINE: October 2, 2019 (11:59PM EDT)

NCECA’s Emerging Artists program seeks to identify under-recognized artists doing extraordinary work in ceramic art and highlight them to an international audience during NCECA’s Annual Conference. Curator Sequoia Miller and artist Kevin Snipes will join NCECA Director at Large Julia Galloway as the panel to select Emerging Artists through a review of statements, images, and support documents submitted for consideration. Emerging Artists will receive a $3,300 honorarium, provide articles to be published in the NCECA Journal, exhibit their work, and make presentations during the 2020 NCECA conference in Richmond. Additional opportunities for promotion may occur through NCECA’s blog and other special programming. Exposure during the conference also includes participation in informal talks and special events.
NCECA believes that those creating work offering new/exciting/thoughtful perspectives on the ceramic medium, expanding upon genres of creative production and inquiry are qualified as candidates for its Emerging Artist awards. An Emerging Artist may be at the early stages of receiving recognition for his/her work but is currently underrepresented through exhibitions or publications that might otherwise bring the work to wide attention. The intent of the award is to recognize, cultivate and amplify vital, new voices of creative endeavor in ceramics. The award enables these artists to reach broader national and international audiences and impact discourse in the field.
Because the concept of emergence in the arts does not invariably correlate with a specific age, or other quantifiable terms, NCECA requires applicants to briefly describe why they perceive themselves to be at an emergent point in their careers and how they anticipate the award will impact the trajectory of their endeavors. The review committee, at their discretion, may eliminate candidates that are considered to be beyond “emerging.”

We are pleased to be holding our 12th annual international call for entries, Beyond the Brickyard.
The selected works will be exhibited at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT, in early 2020.
This year’s exhibition will be juried by Chis Staley.

Specifications
- The competition is open internationally to ceramic artists 18 years of age or older.
- Current residents of the Bray may not apply.
- Artists may submit up to 3 works for consideration, and up to 2 images of each piece (one complete photo plus one detail or alternate angle).
- All artwork must be for sale and available during the time of exhibition.
- The artwork exhibited must be the same piece(s) submitted for consideration.
- Submitted artwork must not exceed 24” in any direction or weigh more than 35 lbs.
- The artwork entered should be prepared for professional display and not so fragile as to be potentially dangerous to the work or others when shipped/displayed/handled with reasonable care.
- Artists are responsible for cost of shipping selected work(s) to the Archie Bray Foundation (ABF). Artists are responsible for their own insurance for shipping to ABF and during the time that artwork resides here. ABF will assume cost and shipping insurance for the return of any unsold work.
- For good image quality and a fast upload, your image files should be sized at and no larger than
1800 x 1800 pixels at 72 dpi (approximately 6″ x 6″ at 300 dpi)

Submissions can be edited and are not officially submitted until you choose the “Complete Submission” tab and enter your payment method.
Submissions must be received online by midnight MDT, September 15, 2019.
Entry Fee
The cost of entering Beyond the Brickyard is $35 USD for up to 3 works.

From the successful entrants, three awards will be selected:
Juror’s Choice Award: $400
Director’s Choice Award: $400
People’s Choice Award: $100
Sales Commission
Artists will receive 50% commission of their work sold during exhibition, while ABF will retain 50%.

Come Up To My Room (CUTMR)

Call for Submissions for Come Up To My Room 2020, the Gladstone’s Annual Alternative Art and Design Event is now open!
CUTMR is an annual 3-day alternative art and design exhibition created and produced by the Gladstone Hotel. It’s one of the only places where art and design intersect, with the historic hotel becoming a platform for site-specific, immersive installations. Visitors explore, discover, and engage in conversation with the artists. Different from their 37 permanent artist-designed hotel rooms, CUTMR presents temporary projects that occupy and alter spaces in dramatic, conceptual or experimental ways.
Artists are selected based on their body of work and not on proposals. This invitation allows artists to challenge themselves and try new things in this unconventional setting. The unique model allows for the evolution of ideas, risk-taking, and an element of surprise. Participants use art and design to converse, connect, collaborate, and construct delight in the unexpected.
The curators are looking for installations created for or adapted to the site and space. 2D and 3D art, craft, and design media/projects are very workable. Projects that incorporate video, sound, or light are appropriate for selected spaces.
Over the years many of the winning entries have been by fibre and textile artists:
Cleo Halfpenny’s “Stay a While.” Cleo is an emerging artist with a sculpture/installation-based practice working primarily with textiles as a medium.
Amanda McCavour’s room 2018. McCavour uses a sewing machine to create thread drawings and installations by sewing into a fabric that dissolves in water. She is interested in the vulnerability of thread, its ability to unravel, and its strength when it is sewn together.
Kathleen Wick’s room 202 focuses on her fascination with wool. Her installation used discarded wool blankets to scrutinize wealth and value in society where the need for environment conservation and the economy are pulling us in different directions.

ABOUT THE JUROR: Writer, curator, and educator Garth Johnson is the Paul Phillips and Sharon Sullivan Curator of Ceramics at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York. Johnson is known for his irreverent wit, which can be explored through his weblog, www.extremecraft.com. He has also exhibited his work and published his writing nationally and internationally, including contributions to the books Handmade Nation, Craftivity, Craft Corps, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Nation Building. His book, 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse, was published by Quarry. He is a self-described craft activist who explores craft’s influence and relevance in the 21st century.

ELIGIBILITY:
The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older
SPECIFICATIONS:
The exhibition will consist of three-dimensional ceramics work. Wall-mounted pieces must be prepared and ready for hanging and no larger than 36″ X 36″. Free-standing pieces may not exceed 32″ X 32″ X 48″ or weigh more than 75 lbs. including box or crate. Work across a variety of display solutions is encouraged including video or film related to clay. Accepted work cannot be substituted and must be available for the duration of the exhibit. Please contact The Center with questions about oversize pieces or other shipping concerns before you apply.

Submit up to three JPEG/JPG digital images. Upload options for image files:

SHIPPING/DELIVERY OF ARTWORK:
The artist is responsible for the cost of shipping or mailing artwork to and from The Center for Contemporary Art using Fed-X or DHL. A return shipping label and return postage must be included with the artwork. Artwork may also be hand-delivered to and picked up from The Center for Contemporary Art on the appropriate dates during the scheduled times.
INSURANCE AND SALE OF ARTWORK:
All artwork is insured for its declared value from the time it is received through January 10, 2020 while it is on the premises. Artists are responsible for insuring artwork during transit.
The Center for Contemporary Art receives a 30% commission on all exhibition sales.
MEDIA/PUBLIC RELATIONS: The Center for Contemporary Art reserves the right to use digital images of exhibited artwork for media, website, PR and advertising.
