The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 33rd annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Since 2017, the exhibition has expanded to include works by international artists.

2020 ENTRY GUIDELINES

HOW TO ENTER
Our entry deadline for the 2020 exhibition is September 29, 2019. Please review the upcoming schedule below for more information on the next steps in the competition.  A downloadable 2020 Prospectus is available for entry guidelines and procedures questions. Entries can be submitted online or through the mail.

AWARDS
The Greater Denton Arts Council will provide Juror Awards in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500 and $250. Winners will be determined by the juror and will be announced at the opening reception of the exhibition on February 7, 2020.

ELIGIBLE MEDIA
Works produced in any of the craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, or any combination of craft media, are acceptable. Entries must be the complete work of the submitting artist. Works can be a collaboration piece, all collaborators must be listed in the space provided on the entry form. Local, national, and international artists are encouraged to apply. Kits or commercially designed works will not be accepted. All work must have been completed within the past two years (2017-2019) and not previously exhibited at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES + ENTRY FEE
Each artist is limited to three (3) entries. There is a $40 (USD) non-refundable fee, for up to three (3) entries. Payments must be submitted online at the time of application.

SIZE LIMITATIONS
All work must be ready for installation. Submissions are restricted to a weight limit of no more than 75 pounds. GDAC reserves the right to exclude any entry that presents complex installation or assembly problems.

SALES
A 30% commission will be retained from all work sold during the exhibition. Works which are not for sale must be clearly marked as such (NFS).

PUBLICITY
The exhibition will be publicized regionally, nationally and internationally. GDAC reserves the right to use photographs or digital images of any accepted work for the purpose of publicity.

DELIVERY + RETU RN OF WORK
Artists are responsible for pre-paying all shipping charges to and from the exhibition site upon selection by the juror. Accepted works must be hand-delivered or shipped according to the instructions provided in the Artist Contract. Entries will be insured by GDAC while in its custody. Insurance value for pieces NFS should reflect fair market value. No work may be withdrawn before the close of the exhibition. Sending an entry to this exhibition shall imply an agreement on the part of the sender to all conditions above.

call for entry: The Almighty Cup 2019: A National Juried and Invitational Exhibition

The Almighty Cup Show show is a fundraiser for the Shaped Clay Society, a student run clay club at Syracuse University. All entry fees go directly to the club to support student scholarships, activities, and conference attendance and provides professional development through local, national and international experiences in the field of ceramic arts.  The Shaped Clay Society is committed to giving its members the necessary tools and experiences to successfully take their art into the communities of the world.  Contact Information: Devon Gelhar, Shaped Clay Society President, [email protected].

Juror: Garth Johnson, Curator of Ceramics at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY

Eligibility: Open to all residents of the United States of America.

Entries:  $30 for up to 5 entries. Maximum file size 7 MB. Minimum size 5″ in short direction @ 150 dpi. Maximum 2 images per entry. Digital images should be labeled with the artist’s last name_first name and the entry #. (Charlie Brown would be brown_charlie_1a) Cups must be made primarily of clay. The idea of cup may be interpreted freely. Work may not exceed 12 inches in any direction or 20 pounds. All exhibited work must be for sale.  A 50% commission will be taken on all sales.  Selected pieces must be available for the duration of the exhibition.  Substitutions for accepted work will not be allowed.

Shipping and Insurance:  The artist is responsible for the shipping and insurance of the work to the gallery. Gandee Gallery will be responsible for insurance during the exhibition and return shipping of unsold works.

Documentation: Gandee Gallery reserves the right to photograph all works displayed in the exhibition. These images may be used for documentation, sales, promotion and publicity.

Awards: CLAYSCAPES Pottery in Syracuse, NY along with the Shaped Clay Society will be sponsoring awards of up to $500.

Wayne Art Center is pleased to welcome Jane Milosch, Executive Director, Smithsonian Provenance Research Initiative in the Office of the Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture, Smithsonian Institution, as the juror for the CraftForms 2019 exhibition.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Jane Milosch is founding director of the Smithsonian Provenance Research Initiative in the Office of the Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture, Smithsonian Institution. Previously she was Senior Program Officer for Art, directing pan-Institutional art programs, new interdisciplinary initiatives and strategic planning efforts for the arts at the Smithsonian. She completed the Getty Leadership Institute program. Milosch was Chief Curator at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, curator of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in Iowa, and of the Detroit Institute of the Arts. As Fulbright Scholar in Munich, she was managing editor for Prestel art books and consultant to art museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions. Her research interests include modern and contemporary art, craft, and design, especially the intersections of art, science, design, and technology.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Artists must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Works submitted must be original in design. Collaborative works are accepted.
  • Work must have been completed in the last 2 years. (Created after 2017)
  • Work previously exhibited at Wayne Art Center is not eligible.
  • All work must be for sale.
  • Work must remain on display for the duration of the exhibit.

Las Vegas Nevada’s Clay Arts Vegas is pleased to host “What Goes Bump In The Night 2019” a national juried art exhibition, October 3 –November 12, 2018 in the Victor F. Keen Gallery, at Clay Arts Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. “What Goes Bump In The Night 2019” will feature functional and sculptural work exploring the sublime.
This annual show explores a darker side of ceramic art and rings in Halloween in Las Vegas. Let your imagination run wild with pieces that make the hair on the back of your neck rise. From night mares to the darkness that might live in the soul there are things that remind us of when we were children sacred in the dark by things that go bump in the night.
Deadline:September 1, 2019. Participation is open to all artists 18 years of age or older. Work submitted must be original, must use clay as the primary material, must specify firing technique(s) and size, and must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Specifications:
The application is open to all artists 18 years and older. An artist may submit 1-3 original works, which have been completed in the last two years. Accepted works that differ significantly from the entry images or suffer from poor presentation will be disqualified.

Work may not exceed the dimensions of L–6” W–6” H–8” (including handle) or weigh over 2lbs.
Images should be submitted as jpegs and sized at 300dpi and 10 inches (3000 pixels) on its shortest side. Files should be labeled first name_last name_entry number (e.g. John Smith would be john_smith_2.jpg).

Media Restrictions:
Drinking vessels (cups, mugs, yunomis, tankards, tumblers, goblets, tea bowls, etc.) must be made primarily from clay and 100% functional with food safe glazes. Work may not exceed the dimensions of L–6” W–6” H–8” (including handle) or weigh over 2lbs. All exhibited work must be for sale. Selected pieces must be available for the duration of the exhibition.
