call for entry: Plate & Platter: National Juried Ceramics Exhibition Prospectus

Entry deadline is Saturday, December 1, by Midnight Hawaii–Aleutian Standard Time (HST).

Carbondale Community Arts will host Plate & Platter: National Juried Ceramics Exhibition from January 16 through February 22, 2019 at Carbondale Community Arts Artspace 304, located in downtown Carbondale, in collaboration with Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Art and Design Ceramics area.

Plate & Platter 2019 will be the first in a biennial national juried exhibition showcasing functional and sculptural ceramic plates and platters with innovative surface, form, function, and/or concept. This inaugural exhibition will be juried by ceramic artist Chandra DeBuse.

Eligibility: Open to all artists 18+ living within the United States. Works must measure no more than 20” in any direction or weigh more than 50 lbs and must be ready for display. Work must be 70% ceramic, completed within the last three years, and address the theme of plate and/or platter. Please indicate on image list any installation instructions. Specialty hardware or accessories such as plate hangers must be provided by the artist.

Fee: Artists may submit images of up to three works for a non-refundable $30 fee. Selected exhibitors are responsible for shipping costs; pre-paid return-shipping labels must be sent along with accepted work. Submissions will not be considered complete until both the entry submission and the entry fee have been received by Carbondale Community Arts. Submission Guidelines: Images must be formatted JPEG or JPG, under 5MB with a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longest side. File names should include your name and the title of the artwork in the following format: “Lastname_Firstname_Title.jpg”. All images should accurately reflect the work submitted. Substitutions for accepted works are not allowed. By submitting an entry application, the artist agrees to gallery’s use of images for advertisement purposes.

Juror:  Chandra DeBuse is a studio potter in Kansas City. She received her MFA from the University of Florida in 2010. Her illustrated pottery has been featured in several magazines and publications including the books Humor in Craft, Graphic Clay and New Ceramic Surface Design. DeBuse has presented her work as a 2012 NCECA Emerging Artist, at SOFA Chicago, at the 2016 Utilitarian Clay Symposium at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and at the 2018 Alabama Clay Conference. She is a founding member of Kansas City Urban Potters. She has led over 50 workshops on designing illustrated pottery at art centers nationwide. For more about Chandra see ChandraDeBuse.com.

Events & Awards: Cash and ceramics vendor awards will be selected by the Juror Chandra DeBuse. A reception including an award presentation and Artist Lecture by Chandra Debuse will be held on Friday, January 25, from 5 – 7 PM. On Saturday, January 26, the juror will give an artist demonstration from 9 AM – 3 PM at Artspace 304. The public is welcome to attend.

Sales: Carbondale Community Arts retains a 30% commission on works sold during the exhibition. List on the entry form if it work not for sale (NSF) under retail sale price. Payment to artists for artwork sales will be issued by Carbondale Community Arts 2-4 weeks after the close of the exhibit.

Shipping: Exhibitors are responsible for shipping costs; pre-paid return-shipping label must be sent along with accepted work. All work must be double boxed (pack each item with ample padding in a small inner box and pack small box(es) surrounded by tightly packed padding with 2 inches of “float space” within the outer shipping box). Delivery of Accepted Works: Once artists have been notified regarding accepted pieces (December 15, 2018), A signed exhibition contract is required with shipment or delivery of work.  A pre-paid return-shipping labels must be sent along with accepted work. Accepted works may be shipped via UPS, FEDEX, USPS or hand-delivered, but must arrive no later than Friday, January 10, 2019. Works may be hand-delivered to the Carbondale Community Arts, 304 W Walnut Street, Carbondale, IL 62901 during gallery hours Wednesday & Friday 11 – 5 PM, Thursday 11 – 7 PM or by appointment. All works must be display ready, any hanging devices or special hardware needed for installation are the responsibility of the artist.

job posting: Tenure-track/Tenured position in Ceramics at UCLA

The UCLA Department of Art, in the School of the Arts and Architecture, invites applications for a tenure/ tenure-track (assistant/associate/full) position in Ceramics. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate art majors in the area of Ceramics, with an emphasis on contemporary studio practices. They are seeking candidates who will actively contribute to creating a community of students, staff, and faculty in the Department and University that is richly diverse in cultural backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints.

Qualifications:

A BA or BFA is required and an MFA is preferred. They are seeking an artist working primarily in ceramics who is developing or has established a strong and active exhibition record. The candidate is required to have expertise in the history, discourses, and practices of contemporary art as well as contemporary ceramics. The candidate is also required to have technical expertise in digital fabrication and a range of ceramics methods.

The candidate will be expected to teach beginning and advanced level undergraduate studio courses in Ceramics as well as graduate studio, critique, and seminar courses. This is an open rank search with particular interest in successful Assistant or Associate level candidates. The level of appointment will be determined by the candidate’s qualifications and professional experience. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2019.

The successful candidate will be the Area Head for Ceramics. The Ceramics Area Head is responsible for scheduling all Ceramics courses, recruiting adjunct faculty, and has a pivotal role in Ceramics graduate admissions recruiting and decisions, TA selection and scheduling, and advocacy for scholarships and awards for Ceramics students, especially Ceramics graduate students.

Evidence of successful mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students is particularly desired.

Successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and advising the full-time Ceramics Laboratory Supervisor, advising and making decisions about spending priorities, equipment purchase choices, and overall budget considerations in consultation with the Senate faculty. The Ceramics Area Head also is responsible for basic decisions about scheduling and staffing open studio periods in the undergraduate Ceramics Lab outside of scheduled classes, monitoring supplies and inventory in Ceramics, and the maintenance and repair of all equipment in the Ceramics studios, which includes gas and electric kilns, clay mixers, potters’ wheels and other equipment.

call for artists: Exhibition Applications for the Saskatchewan Craft Council

Deadline: November 15 annually

The Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery presents solo, two-person, and group exhibitions reflecting craft history, contemporary practice, and innovation. The SCC Gallery policy prioritizes showing Saskatchewan artists and curators, but aims to include at least one touring or out-of-province exhibition each year.

For each of the six exhibitions accepted to the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery annual schedule, the SCC will provide installation assistance; insurance; promotion; documentation; administrative labour; and artist fees to be paid to the artist(s). To assist the SCC with the cost of the aforementioned labour and staffing, a 40% commission will be retained on any sales resulting from an exhibition.

The SCC encourages applications from self-identified members of under-served communities. We encourage submissions from Indigenous artists, artists with disabilities, new Canadians as well as people from visible and invisible minorities.

Criteria

The SCC Gallery is committed to showcasing fine craft artists; other forms of visual art may be considered in addition to an exhibition that has a primary focus on craft.

Process

The Exhibitions & Education Coordinators along with the SCC Curatorial Committee assess all applications annually. Information from each applicant is sent to members of the Curatorial Committee prior to the annual review meeting, where proposals are considered along with their support material. The Curatorial Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Exhibitions Coordinators. Applicants will be informed of the Curatorial Committee and Exhibitions Department’s decisions following the curatorial meeting in late December – mid January of each year. Additional Curatorial Committee meetings may be scheduled as decided by the Exhibitions and Education Coordinators.
