Description of Show:
Cafecito, a Juried Exhibition of Espresso Cups. The juror, McKenzie Smith, is an artist native to Florida and currently residing in the Tampa Bay area. This show is a toast to the historical Cuban influences in Tampa that are steeped with the Cuban coffee traditions of cafecito (café cubano) and café con leche. Cafecito represents contemporary interpretations of espresso and demitasse cups.

Exhibition Dates: March 27th- April 22nd.
Application Deadline: February 15th, 2011 by Midnight Pacific Time
Email Notification Begins: March 1st, 2011
Accepted Works due: By March 18th 2011
Exhibition: February 21st – March 18th, 2011
Juror:
McKenzie Smith is a potter working in Florida. McKenzie worked as a Core Student at the Penland School of Crafts. He received his BFA from the University of South Florida and his MFA from the University of Florida. Residencies include the Archie Bray Foundation, Banff Center For The Arts, Baltimore Clayworks, and the University of Miami. Smith has exhibited widely and taught numerous workshops.

Eligibility:
Is open to all artists eighteen years and older. Artworks must be original and completed within the last two years. Any interpretation of demitasse/espresso cups will be considered for the exhibition. All works must not exceed 5 inches in any dimension. All artwork must be primarily ceramic.

Delivery and Return of Artwork:
The artist is responsible for delivering or shipping the artwork to and from the Cafecito/CafeHey. A bar-coded shipping label from UPS / FedEx or a check to cover costs of return shipping must be included with all shipped work. The artist is responsible for insuring the artwork while it is in transit.
Entry Procedures:
Step 1 Go to http://www.cafecito2011.com and fill out the entry form.
Step 2 Send images to: [email protected]
Step 3 Pay the entry fee using the secure Paypal link.
Image Details:
All images must be in JPEG format and submitted via email. File size should be approximately 5″ x 7″ at 300 dpi.
Please name image files with the first initial and last name of the artist and the entry number i.e. jharris_entry1.jpg

Cafecito will retain the submitted images of accepted artwork and reserves the right to use the images in publications and publicity for the Exhibition and for Cafe Hey advertising.
Please note: Entries will be considered when all three steps are complete.
Deadline for entry:
All three steps must be completed by midnight Pacific Time February 15, 2011
Email notification of results: March 1, 2011
Shipped works must be received by: March 18, 2011
Cafecito is in conjunction with the 2011 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference.

Learn the art of making your own handmade brushes suitable for use with water based mediums and ceramic decoration. Beginning and advanced techniques and construction methods will be taught for making brushes from deer, skunk, horse hair, raccoon, goat and ring tail cat. Demonstrations will involve step by step instruction for making handles from bamboo, yucca, wood and found objects. This course is open to all skills levels. Registration begins Feb. 1, 2011.

Artist of the Day: Sue Roberts

Here we go folks – a month of daily doses of eye candy.

What a treat to start off the month with the amazing work of Sue Roberts. Enjoy!


Artist’s Statement:

From a young age I have been inspired by the human figure, so sculpting the figure just seemed to come naturally to me. I especially enjoy the challenge of capturing in clay the range of our inner psyches, manifesting through the figure’s gesture, posture and expression.

Humor and social commentary play a large part in my work, especially that of family and relationships. culturally, we generalize the concept of family and relationships, turning them into more of an ideal than reality.

Having fun with those generalizations underscores the importance of not taking ourselves too seriously, or becoming stuck within our own thoughts and perceptions. For me, there is a powerful inner strength that arises in being playful and open to new and different ideas and experiences. as an artist, that strength inspires and excites me to keep thinking differently about the human world and, at the same time, push myself creatively.
