Seeking Nominations for New Lois Moran Award for Craft Writing
$3,000 Juried Award | Nominations Due June 30, 2021
The longest-serving editor of American Craft magazine and a monumental figure in the history of the American Craft Council, Lois Moran was a tireless proponent of the field of American craft. She had a mission to elevate the importance of craft for a broad audience. The ACC is now seeking nominations for an award in her name recognizing the work of writers committed to moving the craft conversation forward.
The jurors for this award, which will be given in Fall 2021, are Glenn Adamson, Indira Allegra, and Rachael Arauz. Read more about our jurors below.

We are accepting submissions for Cup: The Intimate Object XVII, which we will host this fall. Each year this international exhibition brings together some of the most exciting handmade cups in contemporary ceramics. We welcome submissions by national and international artists in all stages of their careers, from current students and artists who are just emerging on the scene to those who are well established.
We require submissions to include exactly five outstanding cups that are the same ones you would send for the show if accepted. You can review all submission requirements and details under Gallery Submissions on our website. As usual it is free to submit cups for consideration for this exhibition.

2021 Juror: Michelle Ettrick
“I was a non-English speaking 13-year old when I arrived in the United States in 1982. Life in Brooklyn, New York was a stark contrast to my early memories of Panama and the simple joys of climbing trees and playing with my friends while my mom was nearby hanging clothes on the line. As an Afro-Latina, I struggled to find a community that would accept me and where I felt I belonged. My own identity was regularly challenged by others who judged me by the texture of my hair or the fact that I spoke Spanish fluently and struggled to communicate in English. When judged by adults and my peers, my hair was “too good” to be considered black and the color of my skin was too dark to be speaking Spanish. In addition to the hardships, I have many fond memories of my time in New York. Brooklyn is where I learned about double dutch and cooling off from the New York summer heat in the open fire hydrants.
I love being a maker and clay is my medium of choice. Clay is a very personal material to me. When I put my hands in the clay and my fingers get lost in the mixture, for the moment, we become one. I stretch pull, pinch and form shapes where I leave evidence of my having been there. I follow up by drawing on my work where I embrace my natural curly hair, heritage, womanhood and at times current worldly struggles. My artwork is a record of my experiences as an Afro-Latina American.”

Material Mugs is our annual material based cups show and this year we will again be featuring underglazes! Our hope is to exhibit cups which express the full range of surface possibilities- underglazes that are trailed, painted, sprayed, transferred, washed, globbed on, inlayed etc.
Now in its sixth year, Material Mugs is one of the most anticipated juried ceramics exhibitions by makers and collectors alike. This will be the 3rd juried exhibition at our new location.
The exhibition is open to cups using every type of clay, temperature, and atmosphere, just as long as underglazes are used in the process.
Companion Gallery will be printing custom t-shirts designed by Michelle Ettrick and the entire exhibition will be available for sale online.
The exhibition opening will be held at our new location on Friday September 10th

The Citizens of Craft Virtual Market is a collaboration between Fabrique 1840 and the Canadian Crafts Federation. Our goal is to promote craft artists and expand their online reach. Supported by Canadian retailer Simons, ‘Fabrique 1840’ is a vital showcase for handmade products, connecting craft artists with the notoriety and visibility of the broader Simons.ca website.
For context, through the simons.ca platform, Fabrique 1840 reaches:
- 260,000 unique visitors per month
- An online community of over 360,000 followers
- 1 million newsletter subscribers
The Citizens of Craft Virtual Market will launch online on October 1, 2021, and special promotions will last 1 month. Products selected for the market will remain on the platform after the run of this promotion, at the discretion of Fabrique 1840.

Conditions for participation:
The Canadian Crafts Federation is offering the opportunity for active members of the Provincial and Territorial Craft Councils to apply to this virtual market, for free. If selected, there are no additional registration fees for the event. However, participating artists must comply with Fabrique 1840’s rules of use that are in place for all of their business partners. These rules are described in the business model below.
If your work is selected for the virtual market, online product descriptions will be written and translated by the Fabrique 1840 team.
How to participate
To submit your application, you must:
- Complete a table of information about the products that you would like to sell. You may propose up to 6 products. Each row corresponds to a product and each column provides information that will allow Fabrique 1840 to write the product descriptions.
- Submit a photo for each product you are submitting. At this stage, the photos do not need to be professional. They just have to clearly show the product so that it is able to be understood. If selected, artists must work with Fabrique 1840 to take product photos that meet their professional criteria. Upload 1 to 3 photos of each product you are submitting.

VisArts invites artists working in the expanded field of ceramics to apply for “This Moment of Rupture”.
“This Moment of Rupture” is a juried national survey of contemporary ceramics today. We seek a broad spectrum of works that both celebrate traditional forms and that challenge the conventional definitions of craft. During “this moment of rupture” with the related crises of the pandemic, racial uprisings, climate change, and economic decline, how are ceramic artists responding? Is there a renewed sense of emotional purpose? Is activism playing a role in contemporary ceramic practice? We are seeking artists who work in an expansive variety of media but that all incorporate ceramics in some way, be it with traditional methods, or with processes such as 3d printing, or as a part of performance art, mixed media and more. Artists may submit up to 3 works for consideration.
This exhibition will be juried by the founder and director of Red Dirt Studio, Margaret Boozer.
Application Deadline: Monday, June 7, 2021 before midnight*
