Concordia University’s Department of Studio Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Ceramics to begin August 1, 2019.
Position Description
As the only dedicated university-level program in Quebec and one of only seven in Canada, Ceramics at Concordia University is a fast-growing and dynamic program that promotes the development of new approaches and interdisciplinary exploration. Courses offer a strong material grounding while addressing a broad range of contemporary art practices including object-oriented, space and time-based approaches. This year the program received a major capital investment in state-of-the-art equipment and renovated facilities to increase firing capacity and facilitate innovation.
We are seeking applicants with an established practice in ceramic sculpture or installation. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of both discipline-based and expanded approaches to ceramics, as well as a sound knowledge of art history and theory in ceramics and sculpture. The ideal candidate will have an advanced working knowledge of ceramic materials and processes, including expertise in hand-building and slip-casting techniques. Interest and experience in 3D digital fabrication would be considered advantageous. Since this position will play a strategic role in the ongoing development of new curriculum and research initiatives both inside and outside the Studio Arts Department, preference will be given to candidates with the strongest research-creation and exhibition record who demonstrate the potential to meet the steering and leadership goals of the program and the department.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in ceramics and graduate-level studio seminars in ceramics and sculpture, recruit and supervise graduate students, provide direction and leadership in the program and engage in administrative duties. Other responsibilities include the expectation to maintain an active professional practice and to participate in service within the larger university community.
Qualifications
Applicants should hold a MFA degree (or equivalent), have a strong exhibition/research record, a minimum of two years college and/or university teaching experience and administrative experience. Prior activities demonstrating leadership, service and commitment to diversity is strongly sought. Although courses are taught in English, fluency in French would be considered an asset.
About the Faculty and Department
With over 4,000 students, faculty, and staff, the Faculty of Fine Arts is among the five largest visual and performing arts schools in North America. Montréal, our home, is exceptional: with 170,000 university students, a vibrant cultural scene, and the most affordable tuition in Canada, the city ranks among the top ten best destinations in the world for tertiary education. While supporting a significant Anglophone population, Montréal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris. North America’s number one choice for international events and festivals, Montréal was the first metropolis to be designated a UNESCO City of Design by the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity. Nestled in the heart of this pulsing city, embraced by a dynamic research university, the Faculty of Fine Arts benefits from extraordinary access to brilliant practitioners, thriving venues, cross-cultural perspectives, and an extensive network of outstanding facilities for research and production.
Taking advantage of our place within the rich fabric of a research university and our long history as one of the premier sites in Canada for the study and creation of the arts and arts-based scholarship, the Faculty of Fine Arts is currently engaged in a transformative movement in which pedagogical, conceptual, theoretical, and material practices find resonance with a significant diversity of approaches. In our university community, we value equally those practices that embrace aesthetic activism, live performance, historical scholarship, technical experimentation, skills-based production, community fieldwork, as well as traditional and digital fabrication. At the heart of this dense array is the Department of Studio Arts, which, with more than 90 full-time and part-time professors who are among Canada’s most celebrated artists, occupies a significant place within the Faculty’s long-term plan to support both medium-specific training and multi-disciplinary experimentation. The internationally renowned MFA program has been active for over three decades and is one of the few to incorporate a third year for graduate students to prepare thesis work and transition into the next phase of their career. Attracting one of the most talented cohorts in the nation, undergraduate programs are offered in Ceramics, Fibres and Material Practices, Intermedia (Video, Performance and Electronic Arts), Painting and Drawing, Photography, Print Media, Sculpture and Studio Art.

Matt Kelleher Emerging Artist from ten years ago, 2008 reflects…
“Looking back to the opportunity of NCECA Emerging Artist in 2008, I think of the scale. Presenting my work and ideas on such a large platform. It came at a perfect time for me as I was wrapping up a three year residency at Penland School of Crafts and heading out to set up my own studio and business. The event did not change my career overnight, but was more of a recognition of how I had grown up to that point.”
The NCECA Emerging Artist program deadline is coming up! October 3rd, 2018. Consider applying at 2019 NCECA Emerging Artist
