Concordia University’s Department of Studio Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Ceramics to begin August 1, 2019.

Position Description

As the only dedicated university-level program in Quebec and one of only seven in Canada, Ceramics at Concordia University is a fast-growing and dynamic program that promotes the development of new approaches and interdisciplinary exploration. Courses offer a strong material grounding while addressing a broad range of contemporary art practices including object-oriented, space and time-based approaches. This year the program received a major capital investment in state-of-the-art equipment and renovated facilities to increase firing capacity and facilitate innovation.

We are seeking applicants with an established practice in ceramic sculpture or installation. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of both discipline-based and expanded approaches to ceramics, as well as a sound knowledge of art history and theory in ceramics and sculpture. The ideal candidate will have an advanced working knowledge of ceramic materials and processes, including expertise in hand-building and slip-casting techniques. Interest and experience in 3D digital fabrication would be considered advantageous. Since this position will play a strategic role in the ongoing development of new curriculum and research initiatives both inside and outside the Studio Arts Department, preference will be given to candidates with the strongest research-creation and exhibition record who demonstrate the potential to meet the steering and leadership goals of the program and the department.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in ceramics and graduate-level studio seminars in ceramics and sculpture, recruit and supervise graduate students, provide direction and leadership in the program and engage in administrative duties. Other responsibilities include the expectation to maintain an active professional practice and to participate in service within the larger university community.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a MFA degree (or equivalent), have a strong exhibition/research record, a minimum of two years college and/or university teaching experience and administrative experience. Prior activities demonstrating leadership, service and commitment to diversity is strongly sought. Although courses are taught in English, fluency in French would be considered an asset.
