A Penland internship offers a unique opportunity to live and work in a dynamic, creative educational community and work with accomplished professionals in a mutual learning and knowledge sharing environment. All housing and meals will be provided at no charge to the intern for the duration of the internship period, and a stipend for the summer is included. Class and Penland studio access is not provided. Housing will be assigned when interns are selected.
Penland will work with applicants seeking educational credit for the internship. Details can be discussed in the interview process.

Help rebuild a pottery workshop, studio and home
Please help Steve Harrison and Janine King, our two friends and teachers, to rebuild their pottery workshop. After working tirelessly these last weeks to protect their beloved property, they have unfortunately lost both their pottery workshop and studio to the bush fires that have ravaged the village of Balmoral. Luckily, they managed to save the house, but any donation you make will help them rebuild the space they use for their livelihood and where we have spent so many special times creating and sharing with them.

The annual ICAN Juried Exhibition at NCECA is back for its 10th year in 2020. ICAN hosts a juried exhibition of its members’ ceramic artwork to be presented at the annual NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) conference. The event attracts approximately 6,000 ceramic potters, sculptors, collectors, students, teachers, gallery owners, industry leaders, and other prominent leaders and makers in the field. This is an excellent opportunity for ICAN members to show their work in person to who’s who in the field.
This year’s members-only, juried exhibition theme is the teapot! All functional and sculptural teapots can be submitted! This year’s juror is Katie Sleyman, acquisitions and content editor of Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated.
In addition to the winning entries being displayed at NCECA, each piece will be showcased on the ICAN website for the remainder of the 2020 year. With your ICAN membership, you have a chance to share your work with the world!

Juror’s Biography:
Katie Sleyman studied ceramics at the University of Mary Washington, where she graduated with a BA in studio art. Two years in the post-baccalaureate program at the University of Arkansas focused her studio practice and gave her the opportunity to work as a studio technician and instructor at a local community arts center. After completing her MFA in ceramics at Ohio University, Katie joined the editorial staff and currently works as acquisitions and content editor for Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated, and Ceramic Recipes.
Outside of the office, Katie spends time making work in her home studio. Generally, projects are kept contained to the spare bedroom, but occasionally, to the dismay of her partner and cat, they spill over into other spaces. She enjoys watching competitive baking shows, exploring Columbus, and learning new crafts (most recently, small metals).

Northern Clay Center
The Warren MacKenzie Advancement Award (WMAA), founded in 2014, provides an opportunity for students and emerging artists to continue their ceramic research and education for a period of up to twelve consecutive months within the grant year, further expanding their professional development. This award is available to current undergraduate or graduate students, recent graduates (within one year), or those who have completed a university-equivalent training in ceramics (including apprenticeships) within the year prior to the application deadline.
During the grant year, the recipients can research a new technique or process, study with a mentor or in an apprenticeship setting, travel to other ceramic art centers or institutions for classes and workshops, collaborate with artists of another media, and travel. Proposals to fund large capital equipment purchases will not be accepted. One or two cash awards will be made in 2020, up to $3,000 each, for projects taking place between May 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021. Recipients contribute project updates to NCC’s social media and are required to give a public presentation at their school or other institution.
