Artist Statement

I look to make work that creates an effect on the individual person rather than, at first, the community at large. For me, attracting the individual is about finding a passion and creating a bond between maker and user. Original work, purposeful ceramics and creating conversations are the main points that I look to answer within my ceramic medium.

I describe the process I have investigated as “cut and paste”. Utilizing technical aspects of ceramics, related to throwing on the wheel, hand building and mold work. My aim is to create forms that are different but that also relate to my own self. This comes from explorations of design and personal preference, but also from outside sources such as graffiti, geometry, sociology and mass media (Tumblr).

(Repli) (Dupli) Cate is an exhibition of ceramic work, which is
concluded from my year long residency at Medalta’s Artist in Residency
program, in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

I look to make work that creates an effect on the individual person

JASON DESNOYERS BIO
Jason Desnoyers was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Jason earned a
BFA in the field of Photography from Concordia University and recently
completed his BFA in Ceramics at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
During his time at NSCAD, Jason was awarded the “FUNSCAD Homer Lord
Scholarship Award” in recognition of his ceramic work and his
dedication.

Jason’s process relies heavily on altering the clay model or the mold
itself, decorative patterns related to tessellation, and a strong ideal
based on functionality. He is currently focused on experimenting with
glazing techniques, slip casting and altering, and the perfection of his
mold making practice.
While expressing his own personal identity is important, Jason hopes
that his ceramic art creates an identity that communicates with others,
through the function and aesthetic of the piece. He measures the success
of his pieces through the utilitarian purpose and decorative allure.

1st Medalta International Spoon Competition

Maybe it was something in the air at Medalta lately, what with the 1st International Cup show opening and all. But while I was visiting earlier this month, Vipoo Srivilasa who was there for a residency drummed up the idea to put together an International Spoon Competition as well. September saw a new batch of year long residents taking over the studio as well as a number of artists from South East Asia coming over for a visit and a brief month long residency with Vipoo. The energy in the studio was inspiring. So many new artists getting settled in and starting to work and the spoon competition was the perfect thing to get the kilns firing and the creative ideas flowing. Sometimes all it takes is a little something out of the ordinary day to day of your studio practice to open up some new perspectives and ideas. Returning later in the month I saw how this friendly competition really brought the artists together (well that and all the amazing shared meals they created).

So I here by present to you the spoons in the competition. Each is a thing of beauty and interestingly speaks to each artist’s larger art practice. The winner of the competition (judged by those participating) was Teo Huey Min’s lovely spoon. Congrats to you!
