Seattle artist and Host Committee Member, Charlie Bigger is excited to announce Weather or Not, a site-specific, outdoor installation opportunity at South Lake Union Park in Seattle to coincide with the 2012 conference. Weather-Or-Not presents an opportunity for students and teachers to explore the EDGY artistic avenue of collaborative installations affected by time and weather. Charlie shares that his excitement and imagination around this event is sparked by two elements. “The first is the theme…the theme for NCECA 2012…”On The Edge” immediately grabbed my attention and fired up my imagination. Secondly, being interested in the history of the studio movement in Ceramics, a concern among my peers in the ceramics world deals with a perception that younger clay workers seem to be less numerous than a few years back. I am looking forward to being able, through NCECA, to provide this great venue to share and explore new ideas, and experiments with up and coming young ceramics students that might not otherwise realize that NCECA is also for them, not just established studio artists of my generation.” On-Site Conference Liaison, Marge Levy writes that through Weather-Or-Not, “we hope to capture the inclinations of those who are in a period of their artistic lives where they are thinking about process, objects, ephemeral notions, and having fun with it all and with each other. ”

Awards and Board Nominations – 2012
2012 Awards: DEADLINE September 30, 2011 The membership of the NCECA Nominations Committee has been recently re-constituted for 2012 to include President-Elect, Patsy Cox (Chair); Director-at-Large, Sam Chung; Past-President
Robert Harrison and Fellow of the Council, Susan Filley. Nominations for Fellows of the Council, Honorary Members, Excellence in Teaching and Outstanding Achievement are now being accepted. The deadline for receipt of nominations packets is September 30, 2011 for awards to be presented at the 2012 Conference in Seattle.

Board Terms to begin in 2012 The NCECA Nominations Committee is also responsible for identifying qualified candidates for positions on the Board of Directors. By September 30, 2011, the Nominations Committee anticipates identifying two qualified candidates each for the role of President-Elect and Director-at-Large positions on the Board of Directors. Board candidates for nominations will be considered by the Board of Directors at its October 2011 meeting in Houston. Information about the Board’s Nominees will be posted on NCECA’s website following this meeting. Additional nominations for one Director-at-Large position and one Student Director-at-Large position will also be accepted at the First Members’ Business Meeting tentatively scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29 during the 2012 conference in Seattle. Following brief speeches by the candidates, elections will take place at the Second Members’ Business meeting on Saturday, March 31, 2012, the final day of the Seattle conference (time TBD).

Clay Gallery presents Cups of Firs, a national juried cup exhibition which embraces a wide spectrum of cup forms both sculptural and utilitarian. Clay Gallery is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Requirements: • The Show is open to all artists who are residents of and working in the United States.
• All work is expected to be predominately made in clay.
• All work accepted must be available for sale during the exhibition.
• Each piece of work is limited to 15 pounds and must not exceed 30 inches in all dimensions.
• Work entered should not be so fragile that shipment or public display is potentially harmful to the work or the viewer.
• Work must be properly prepared and presented for display.
• Accepted work which differs significantly from the application will be disqualified. The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery is calling for submissions to The Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics and The RBC Award for Glass. With the ongoing generosity of Ms. Winifred Shantz and the RBC Foundation, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery presents these prestigious national awards for early-career practicing ceramic and glass artists who have been working professionally for between 3 to 10 years. The awards are intended to allow each winning artist to undertake a period of independent research, or other activities with the capacity to advance their artistic and professional practice at a key moment in his or her career. Winners of the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics and the RBC Award for Glass will receive $10,000 each. Juries comprised of respected artists and arts professionals associated with the silica arts will choose a finalist list. This year’s winners will be announced at a gala event on October 13, 2011. Each of these annual awards presents a monetary prize for innovative professional development to an emerging ceramic or glass artist, allowing the recipients time to travel, to attend international residencies or to conduct research that will enrich experience and fortify career aspirations in the field of contemporary art or fine craft. To apply to either of these awards, you must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The next Indigenous Ceramic Art Award (ICAA) is scheduled for February – April 2012 and is held bi-annually. The ICAA was developed by Shepparton Art Gallery to support Indigenous ceramic artists and acknowledge the special industry of ceramic art practice. The awards encourage and stimulate excellence in this sphere, providing cultural exchange opportunities for Indigenous artists from around Australia and regional Victoria. This biennale award exhibition surveys current Indigenous ceramic art practise, demonstrates current developments in the field including contemporary and traditional works. An exciting public program of cultural activities also accompanies the exhibition and typically includes: ceramic workshops with artists, exhibition floor talks, ceramic workshops for children, and ceramic workshops for Indigenous men and women. Shepparton Art Gallery is a regional gallery with a unique focus. It collects Australian ceramics from the 19th and 20th century and its ceramic collection is one of the best in Australia. Shepparton Art Gallery’s collection of Australian and International ceramics now spans over 3000 works. Due to the Indigenous Ceramic Art Award the gallery now has a growing collection of contemporary Aboriginal ceramics. The Indigenous Ceramic Art Award is made possible with the generous support of The Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Foundation, Margaret Lawrence Bequest, FRRR, S.J.
