The Campaign to Save the Wedgwood Museum received the shocking news that the
UNESCO recognised archive of international importance is
not held in trust and can be dispersed and sold to meet wholly disproportionate
£135m Pension Fund liabilities. Read the Press release from the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) lawyers
here. Stoke-upon-Trent MP Hon. Dr Tristram Hunt MP is meeting with Government Ministers on December 20th to discuss the plight of the Museum. The Battle continues – continued political lobbying is essential:
write to your MP to drive home how important this unique collection is to you. Campaign leader Alison Wedgwood:
“We will begin a fund raising campaign in the new year, asking the government for urgent support, and seeking support from the Art Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and as many generous philanthropists as we can cajole. This collection is not leaving Staffordshire without a fight!”
Write to you MP,
Join our Supporters roll to declare your support and to be kept up to date with the Campaign: help to Save Wedgwood for the Nation. I was shocked to hear of this disgusting decision – I presume under the existing law the courts had little option! I have written to my local MP seeking support and would ask that all who read this article do the same – either to their MP or if outside the UK, Direct to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. David Cameron. Please also Join the
supporters group above. Here is a copy of my letter:
Dear Nicholas Soames,
I run a major website for ceramic art, www.studiopottery.co.uk with an audience of some 25000 per month, with several hundred ceramic artist members. I have watched the unfolding saga surrounding the Wedgwood Museum with consternation and sadness. In essence, as I understand it, because a few museum staff were linked with the company the whole of the assets of the museum can be claimed and sold for the benefit of the old group pension scheme deficit. This ‘loophole’ in the law has been confirmed by the court this week.
The result is that this archive of International importance, recognised by UNESCO can now be split up and sold off to meet the group pension fund liabilities.

Destruction of this unique collection and archive, which was always intended to be held in trust for perpetuity would be a National DISGRACE.
Both personally and on behalf of Studiopottery.co.uk we seek your support in finding a way that this unique collection can be saved for the nation and for future generations.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Dee

MudFire Gallery is issuing calls for ceramic artists for several exhibit opportunities for 2012.
Home or House
Invitational Group Show, 2-3 pieces each by 25 artists. We are seeking original clay works, both small-scale sculpture and illustrated studio pottery. The works in the show will focus on concepts of home, shelter, nesting, or dwelling places. We encourage a broad interpretation of the theme, not limited to anthropological concerns and welcoming the hidey-holes and getaways of all manner of creatures. Through clay we will explore “home” as a place to lay down or lure prey, to lounge calmly or retreat in panic, whether an impressive construction or simply a state of mind. Timeline: December 19, 2011, Submissions Due at MudFire for Consideration
December 23, 2012, Final Invitations Issued
January 6, Acceptance Deadline
February 17, Artwork Arrives at MudFire (early shipments welcome)
March 2, Show Opens
Pirates vs Zombies
Invitational Group Show, 3-5 pieces each by 20 artists. We are seeking original clay works, primarily illustrated studio pottery, though other incarnations of clay may be represented. The works in the show will represents pirate, the undead, or conflict & rivalry between the two groups. Which is the greater pop media phenomena? Who will win the battle for consumers hearts, minds, and wallets? Could Johnny Depp (in character of course) out-drink Rob Zombie? Is it possible to escape jail without a little monkey friend? What do brains taste like? Did the scandalous rogues of the high seas help us avert a little-known colonial-era zombie apocalypse? These are the sort of ridiculous questions we need your help resolving in clay. Timeline: January 27, 2012, Submissions Due at MudFire for Consideration
February 3, Final Invitations Issued
February 17, Acceptance Deadline
March 16, Artwork Arrives at MudFire (early shipments welcome)
April 13, Show Opens
#Occupy the Election
Invitational Group Show, 3-5 pieces each by 20 artists. We are seeking original clay works, primarily illustrated studio pottery, though other incarnations of clay may be represented. This show will take place while the Presidential election cycle is in full gear and top of mind. We’re curious what the Occupy movement will look like at that point, and if the issue of income inequality will have gained ground or retreated in the face of big money media manipulation. Either way, we’re giving it airtime. What do you have to say? Timeline: February 17, 2012, Submissions Due at MudFire for Consideration
March 2, Final Invitations Issued
March 16, Acceptance Deadline
May 11, Artwork Arrives at MudFire (early shipments welcome)
June 8, Show Opens

With your submission, please indicate “Representative Work”, along with a detailed description of what you would be doing especially for the show.
