The Magic of Glazes and Firing
This workshop will be a general overview of ceramic glazes and glaze materials as well as different firing methods. John will discuss oxides, cones, kilns, firing dynamics and various cycles and properties of ceramic materials. It will be done in a fun and relaxed atmosphere of question and answer as well as some more structured lecture periods. The content of the talk will be directed by the participants’ interest. This class is structured for students of all levels.

March 5-6: Adrian Arleo – Transformations
Having worked with the human form for more than 25 years, I’ve figured out a few problem solving techniques and a lot of dos and don’ts. This two-day workshop will be chockfull of demonstrations for coil building the figure, and various surface finishes, both low-fired and non-fired . Anatomical perfection will not be addressed; rather, the demonstrations will focus on building techniques: how to use a base and rod for building tall standing figures, how to begin a seated figure, how to make a head and facial features, how to keep forms from slumping, caving in or cracking. If you’ve had a recurring technical problem, bring it up and we’ll try to remedy it.
The second half of the workshop will be about developing surface textures
and experimenting with different tools and found objects. I’ll share the low-fire glazes that I use, and discuss application techniques. Layering of Terra sigillata is a surface finish we’ll demonstrate, Non-fired paints can add amazing richness to ceramic forms; wax encaustic and casein (milk paint) are favorites that will be talked about as well. This is a 2-day demonstration workshop featuring two distinct approaches to conceiving and constructing with clay. Sam Harvey will demonstrate his innovative coil building techniques. Alleghany Meadows will demonstrate his techniques working with porcelain, both on and off of the potter’s wheel.

Julie York’s work deals with complex themes – means of processing information, cognition and recognition, how one sees and perceives objects – issues typically not explored within the ceramics medium. She is one of a handful of young makers currently redefining the use of clay in sculptural work and her efforts have been recognized. York received the Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2007, the Independence Foundation Fellowship in 2006 and two Creative Production Grants from the Canada Council for the Arts.
Julie York is an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts and Material Practice at Emily Carr University, where she teaches in the Ceramics Department. She received her BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1996 and her MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2000. Subsequently she has held fellowships and residencies at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia and at the International Ceramic Research Centre, Guldagergaard, in Skaelskor, Denmark.

Workshop by Paul Andrew Wandless
November 6 & 7, 2010 (Sat./Sun)
10am -3pm
This Workshop will be an introduction to various images transfer techniques for clay. Monoprinting, screening, stenciling, embossing and relief printing onto plaster and clay slabs will be the techniques covered. How to create custom images in screens, linoleum and stencils will be demonstrated as well so participants will be able to make their own printing tools.
Images and designs will be used as a means of personal expression to create the compositions during the workshop. The surfaces will be used as a canvasses for exploration of printed imagery, design, pattern, color and text. The hand building technique used will be soft slab and slump molds to create a variety of forms for imags and designs. Multiple layers of color and images will be created using AMACO underglazes. Discussions on color theory, perspective and principles of design will also be a part of the workshop to aid in the creation of well executed compositions and designs. All levels of experience welcomed.
