  • Make full use of the extruder and make custom extruder dies
  • Cut stencils from Tyvek
  • Use liquid latex resist with a deer-tail brush

  • Work with stretched slabs
  • Make tools out of common materials and how to modify existing tools to suit a specific need
  • Handbuild functional pots that have good form and function

Gallery, Noble & Greenough School, October 14- November 18th, 2011.

Making pots for daily use is an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
This workshop is an exploration of the fundamentals of pottery making,
both hand built and wheel thrown. The workshop focuses on pots
for the table, including objects made for serving and preparing food,
with Doug and John sharing their many years of ceramic knowledge
and experience.
The workshop will entail morning and afternoon demo sessions.
Lunch will offer the opportunity for a gallery talk in conjunction with
the exhibition in Foster Gallery.
Workshop Fee: $30, $15 for students, free for Nobles students/staff

More About the Artists


Doug Casebeer is the Artistic Director for Ceramics and Sculpture at the Anderson Ranch
Arts Center. He received his MFA in ceramics from Alfred University and his BFA from
Wichita State University. Doug teaches, lectures, builds kilns and exhibits his artwork
worldwide. His artwork is in collections around the world, including a permanent installation
in 2007 at the Yingge Museum of Ceramics in Taiwan. In 2009, Doug was elected to
the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva, Switzerland and was a featured artist
at the Chinese Academy of Fine Art in Beijing.

John Gill is a Professor of Ceramic Art at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred
University. A member of the Council of the International Academy of Ceramics, he has travelled
and lectured throughout the US, Canada and China. His work has been shown at the
L.A.County Museum of Art; Grace Borgenicht Gallery, New York City; Harvey Meadows
Gallery, Aspen; Kraushaar Gallery, New York City; Revolution Gallery, Detroit, Michigan;
and Hadler Rodriquez Gallery in New York. Gill’s work is held in the permanent collections
of numerous art museums including the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Victoria
and Albert Museum, London; Newark Museum, New Jersey and the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art.

Robin Hopper workshop @ Sheridan


This will be Robin’s final Ontario workshop. Don’t miss this chance to see one of Canada’s clay legends. Robin Hopper is an internationally known potter, educator, author, gardener, designer and arts activist who has taught and exhibited worldwide. He was the first recipient of the Bronfman Award, Canada’s most prestigious annual award in craft. Join us in the Ceramics Studio after Saturday’s workshop for Robin’s Book Signing. A selection of his books will be availabe for purchase. On Sunday, there will be a Silent Auction of work produced by Robin during the workshop. Parking on campus is free on weekends.

Slide Lecture: Decoration, Design & Surface Enrichment Throwing Demo: Variety of functional & one‐of‐a-kind forms for later trimming and decorating including fluting, faceting, agate ware, coloured clay work, brushwork, etc. Objects will include teapot, large pitcher, goblet, holy grail, coffee mug, beer mug, tri‐foot plate, parabolic bottle, phoenix bowl, squared bowls and plates. Lunch: 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. DVD Presentation: Making Marks #3 Throwing Demo: working with coloured clays – thrown agateware or Neriage, Nerikomi block making and Zougan. For nine months, from October 2011 to June 2012, Yukiko Murata teach a course devoted to deepen their knowledge and use of porcelain will be structured on a thematic session per month. On Thursday September 22 at 10:00 am and 20:00 pm, there will be an ongoing presentation of Yukiko Murata and Cortiella Rosa, professor and coordinator respectively. The nine thematic sessions have the following contents: Session 1: Analysis of shrinkage.
Session 2: translucency, fragility and resilience (technical SHINOGUI).
Session 3: Whiteness and vitrification (Zug-embedding technique-).
Session 4: Whiteness and vitrification (technical SOMETSUKE-under cover-)
Session 5: Whiteness and vitrification (technical UWAE third fire-Japanese-)
Session 6: Solutions for the lack of plasticity and resilience (technical paper pulp).
Session 7: Theory: oxidation and reduction
Session 8: Individual Project. From all the material worked, each participant will present their own project and advise technically viable.
