Small Art Objects is a fund raising undertaking sponsored by A.I.R. Vallauris and consists of a competition, involving the creation of small art objects, their exhibition and sale. A call for entries is communicated to solicit artist participation from all over the world. Small art objects can be made from any material, but are restricted in size to 15 cm x 15 cm x 15 x cm (6 inches x 6 inches x 6 inches). Creations must also be consistent with the theme determined for the undertaking. Timing for this exercise is co-incident with the Fete Picasso, a popular celebration that takes place annually in Vallauris in honour of its most famous artist in residence. From 1946 and for 10 years, Picasso discovered ceramics with a passion in Vallauris. Coincidentally, Vallauris was already thriving economically with traditional pottery and was a lively and rich cultural environment, enhanced by the presence of Baud, Capron, Derval, Eluard, Picault and Ramié.
Picasso’ s arrival in Vallauris stimulated an artistic effervescence, prompting the influx of numerous artists and intellectuals at that time such as Aragon, Brassaï, Cocteau and Prévert, who came to visit Picasso in his studio. Corridas as well as Picasso’s birthday parties were organized and celebrated in his honour by the town’s population. The “Picasso Effect” was equally evident in the development of the arts. Several painters and sculptors, among them Chagall, Matisse and Brauner followed Picasso into studios in Vallauris. Many ceramists: les Argonautes, Baudard, Collet, Crociani, Gerbino, Gourju, Kostanda, Perot, Raty, Roy, Thiry, Valentin, Volkoff, le Tryptique (Del Pierre, Dialto, Portanier), also worked and created during this same period and were encouraged and entranced by the active artistic ferment.

The Potent Object

This exhibition showcases the power of small-scale sculptural
works. Highlighting artworks no larger than 12 inches, but that possess
a much larger presence. Composed mainly of ceramic, with some mixed
media additions, these objects prove that something doesn’t have to be
huge to be monumental.
Requirements:
Artwork size is limited to 12 inches in any direction.
Use of Mixed media is allowed, but may not comprise more than 50% of the artwork.
Display possibilities include: pedestals, wall, hanging from the ceiling or as an installation.

Another year gone already? Well for me that one went particularly quick. We started off 2012 with a lovely new addition to our family. From there things get a bit blurry (lack of sleep and all), but i do know that the year was filled with lots of wonderous things. New developments in my functional work, an award nomination, and of course some fun stuff around this here blog.
I want to take a minute to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all of your support in the past. Every year the readership of this blog grows and it continues thanks to those of you that support the community through the sharing of your work, exhibitions, events and opportunities. Thank you to all of the artists who let me share their beautiful work. It has been incredibly inspiring.
In November I asked you all to fill out a survey for me about your thoughts on musing and what it offered, how it could be improved and how it could grow to better serve the community. I am intending on writing a full post sharing with you all the results of this survey in detail so that you can understand my motivations and the changes that I hope to make over the next year. My ambitious self thought that i’d have a bunch of the changes set and ready to go for the beginning of the New Year, but hmmm errr, well I took a break over the holidays instead : ) But seriously these will be changes that will take a while to implement and some of these changes will require some participation on the part of you the reader. Don’t worry, it’ll be great I promise.
And speaking of great I want to introduce something I’m really excited about. A sparkly new addition to the blog…. the musing about mud gallery
I’ve been struggling to find the best format to host a gallery site and for now I’ll be using tumbler to see if this is a platform that can work. My intention with this gallery site is that it will be comprised of reader submitted images. There may be times that i will toss in some of my own work or something i’ve run across i just have to share. But I would love to see the readership of this blog use this platform as a means to showcase their own work, to build community, exposure, education and interest in the ceramic arts.
I’ve already had a few wonderful artists submit images to get the site started. Please stop by for a visit, come back often for new eye candy and most importantly please get involved! Submit images, comment on others work, encourage others to participate. This will be a non juried site. I hope to see posts from students, emerging artists, part-timers, long time professionals, artists, educators, gallery owners, everyone – so long as its some how clay related. The more we all put into it the better it can be.

DEADLINE JAN 4th
From March 19 to 22 of 2014 Milwaukee will serve as the host city for the 48th
Annual Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts
(NCECA). I am pleased to be serving as the on-site liaison for this conference.
The theme of the conference, Material World, will be dedicated to an
investigation of the complex ways that materials acquire meaning through the things
that we make and those that surround us in our daily lives. Exhibitions and programs
will expand on traditional definitions of fine and decorative arts, craft and design in
the context of the 21st century.
As
a way of reaching out to innovative artists and thinkers I am writing
to let you know about the call for proposals for the 2014 NCECA
concurrent independent exhibitions. We
are looking for dynamic exhibition proposals from artists at various
stages in their career that will be housed throughout Milwaukee in
conjunction with the conference. Deadline for submission is January 4.
Selected
by a review committee, proposals are considered for their ability to
successfully respond to the thematic structure of the conference and in
the way that they showcase the field at this particular moment in time.
I
hope that you will consider making a proposal, and would ask that you
pass this email along to anyone that you feel would be interested in the
