This exhibition is about celebrating the first meal of the day, breakfast. The intention of this juried exhibition is to showcase the best in contemporary dinnerware as it relates to the theme Breakfast, either functional cereal bowls, toast racks, batter bowls, syrups, toasters, egg cups, shirred egg servers, juicers, butter dishes, coffee pots, tea pots, or related breakfast paraphernalia, or a sculptural work relating to breakfast, no larger than 18” in all dimensions, as created by artists and designers in all media from the United States and Canada. Accepted design drawings should be no larger than 18” x 24” drymounted ready for installation. The International Museum of Dinnerware Design is the only museum in the world devoted to the subject of dinnerware, international in scope, no material limitations, including functional ware, ancient to futuristic, and fine art referencing dinnerware.
Eligibility and Rules:
No media restrictions. Open to all artists and designers in the U.S. and Canada. Each entry must demonstrate the artist’s/designer’s personal interpretation of the theme “breakfast” whether that be in the form of a functional piece or sculpture or design concept model or drawing. Work should be no larger than 18” in all directions (except in the case of design drawings). Entries will be juried on creativity/innovation and artistic merit/aesthetics. If an entry is a functional piece, then one of the images must include actual breakfast food in or on the work. No wall pieces will be accepted except in the case of accepted design drawings, which must arrive drymounted and ready for installation and should not exceed 18” x 24.” All work must have been completed in the last two years. Work submitted may not include perishable materials. Please include the dimensions of the work, as well as materials, along with a brief biography and artist’s/designer’s statement about this particular work. The work does not need to be for sale; however, the the International Museum of Dinnerware Design will retain a 30% commission on any work sold during exhibition.
Juror: Ursula Hargens
About the Juror: Ursula Hargens is a ceramic artist and educator based in Minneapolis. She received an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University; an MA in Art & Art Education from Columbia University, Teachers College; and studied ceramics at Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. She is a three-time McKnight Artist Fellow, has received additional awards from the Jerome Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Most recently, she was named 2020 Ceramic Artist of the Year. Ursula has been teaching art for many years and is co-founder and Program Head of Minnesota New Institute for Ceramic Education (MN NICE), an advanced certificate program in ceramics, developed in 2014 in partnership with Northern Clay Center.
Application deadline and fees:
Application forms (which include information such as artist/designer name, contact information, description of the work, materials, dimensions, and whether it’s for sale) can be submitted via mail or scanned into an email. Get Entry Form. Submit with (a) high resolution digital image(s) (via email) and include information about each image. Also include an artist’s/designer’s statement and brief biography. Artists/designers will be notified of acceptance of work by February 15, 2021. Accepted work must be received no later than March 1, 2021. Design drawings accepted into the exhibition must be received drymounted on foam core ready for installation.

Eutectic Gallery seeks applicants for Women of Woodfire, a juried and invitational exhibition of artists identifying as women who have devoted their careers to incorporating wood firing into their ceramic practice.
Taking place at Eutectic Gallery from June 4 – 26, 2021, and in collaboration with co-organizers Lindsay Oesterritter and Careen Stoll, Women of Woodfire is the second iteration of an ongoing visual conversation between established and rising voices in the field, showcasing innovative techniques and diverse perspectives. This exhibition coincides with the Northwest Woodfire Conference taking place in Newberg, Oregon June 3 – 5, 2021, and will be juried by Eutectic’s Director and co-owner, Brett Binford.
Entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST), December 31, 2020.

About the Exhibition
Small Favors engages artists’ creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a very small scale. For some artists, the work they create is similar to what they normally make, but at a reduced scale. Others use it as an opportunity to break away from what they create in their daily studio practice. The works exhibited are incredibly varied in material, form, and aesthetics. Though small in scale the artworks created for this exhibition are huge in impact.

The cup, one of ceramics’ more iconic images, has been used as a metaphor, a sculptural element, a sculptural foundation and a functional daily piece of dinnerware. The New Harmony Clay Project in cooperation with the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA), a University of Southern Indiana division of outreach and engagement, is now accepting entries for its first annual juried cup show set to be exhibited in historic New Harmony, IN, at the NHGCA, December 5, 2020-January 22, 2021. Whether you choose to fill your cups with beverages, food, pencils, or ideology, this exhibition will feature over 100 handmade creations from artists across the country. This exhibition is made possible in part by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, Lenny and Anne Dowhie Trusts, and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Applications for the 2020
Grants for Apprenticeships open on October 1st.
Five teams of mentors and apprentices will receive $10,000 per team to support a year-long studio pottery apprenticeship.
In this year of momentous events, Studio Potter strongly reaffirms its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusiveness. The Grants for Apprenticeships Program is committed to supporting the development of BIPOC artists and increasing their presence in studio pottery. Applicants from all races, genders, identities, ethnicities, and religions are encouraged to apply.
GRANT PROGRAM MISSION
Established in 2019 and funded by an anonymous donor, Studio Potter’s Grants for Apprenticeships Program supports emerging artists who want to become full-time studio potters and mentor-potters who wish to take on apprentices. This grant program honors the mission of Studio Potter and the legacy of its founder, Gerry Williams, by fostering individual careers in studio pottery, contributing to the life and future of ceramics, ensuring the continuity of a centuries-old tradition in non-academic education.
STUDIO APPRENTICESHIP DEFINED
Studio-based apprenticeship is a form of person-to-person training that places work above theory and emphasizes intimacy and immersion. In Western Cultures, people commonly associate the history of apprenticeship with craft and trade practices in Europe during the Middle Ages, but traditions of lineage-learning have endured for centuries around the world. Apprenticeship continues today as a means of passing down knowledge from generation to generation and as a way for aspiring artisans to build professional communities and prepare for careers as studio artists.
WHY APPRENTICESHIPS?
Pedagogy in craft disciplines has changed dramatically in the last century because of technological advances and the rise of a modern education industry. In this context, apprenticeship offers an alternative to academic educational structures through one-on-one relationships in an established studio. An apprentice learns by participating in the daily lives of their mentor, learning their skills, and being exposed to their values. Apprenticeships contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage and the professional advancement of studio potters.
