ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (CLAY)
The Appalachian Center for Craft is seeking an Artist in Residence (AIR) of exceptional talent to provide support in the Clay Department. The purpose of the AIR program is to provide a creative, residential environment for emerging professional artists and to broaden student and faculty awareness of new approaches and techniques. The Craft Center’s mission is to offer the finest studio professional craft education through the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Certificate of Accomplishment and workshop programs, and to provide a regional cultural resource through the workshop, exhibition, and gallery programs. TERM OF THE RESIDENCY: One year, August 16, 2011 – August 15, 2012. The resident may be invited back for two additional years at the request of the Craft Center for a possible total of three years as a resident. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have completed the MFA degree. Selection will consider the candidate’s potential artistic and professional growth within the residency, technical skills in studio and equipment maintenance, and potential for instructional support. EXPECTATIONS AND DUTIES FOR CLAY RESIDENT: General familiarity with clay materials, operation of clay mixers and pugmills, glaze mixing, electric and gas kiln firing and basic equipment maintenance. Basic knowledge of hand power tools and construction/framing is desirable. Oversight of general maintenance and cleanup of clay studio, glaze pantry, glaze lab, and condition/use of kilns & equipment. Periodic inventory of glaze materials and other studio supplies. The resident will work 20 hours per week on studio maintenance, mixing glazes, firing kilns, and other studio tasks including managing the needs of the workshop program. During the Craft Center’s summer workshop season the resident manages the studio, ordering materials for the workshops and insuring smooth operation. Specifics of managing the studio during workshops will be discussed with the artist in residence in advance, with both the supervising faculty member and the program manager. Residents will receive directions from the program manager regarding workshop support. During the workshops the resident may be able to take part in the workshop on a space available basis, or pursue their own work while also being available for the visiting instructor. INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT: Includes occasional teaching duties during faculty absence. Resident will periodically give appropriate class demonstrations and/or participate in class discussions. Resident may participate in mid-term and final group review. In exchange for compensation, resident may have the opportunity to teach workshops and academic classes in clay or foundations, and conduct outreach demonstrations. The resident must produce a significant body of studio work while showing a high level of technical expertise and aesthetic merit. In consultation with the department head, expectations of the AIR’s studio work will be reviewed after arrival. COMPENSATION: Residence in Craft Center housing is a required condition of studio residencies. Single occupancy bedroom with private bath (whether married or single, cooking and lounge facilities are shared with other residents), individual studio space and 24 hour studio access are provided. A stipend of $1,620.00 annually is provided. Also, opportunities for additional employment through workshop and outreach programs or adjunct teaching may be available. New Canadian artist residency at MAWA, Winnipeg New! Artist Residency At MAWA Two deadlines: April 29, 2011 (for residencies in 2011) and October 28, 2011 (for residencies in 2012) MAWA is offering our urban, loft-style apartment to women visual artists for residencies of 2-4 weeks in duration. Applicants can use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production. We will provide free accommodation and a $300 honorarium. The MAWA apartment is fully furnished and includes a kitchen, a bathroom with shower, a double bed, a double futon/couch, and a designated parking space. All linens and cooking utensils are provided. The apartment is located on the second floor of 611 Main Street in downtown Winnipeg. Sadly, it is a walk-up and is not wheelchair accessible. [email protected]
MAWA’s apartment is a clean space that is not conducive for painting and many forms of sculpture. However, we will work with you and other Winnipeg art centres to help you gain access to the facilities and resources you need. These could include a rough studio, printmaking, video and darkroom facilities, or introductions to likeminded artists and curators.
While at MAWA, we ask that you present your work to our members in a form of your choice (screening, talk, performance, showcase of work-in-progress, etc.). Artists at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Equal consideration will be given to emerging and established artists. Rural Manitoba artists are especially encouraged. Imagine an urban retreat!
Applications must be received by April 29 and October 28 at 4 pm, and should include:
-a cover letter saying why you would like time in the MAWA apartment (goals, rationale)
-a detailed description of what you will need while you are here (access to other facilities or equipment requested)
-first choice of preferred dates; second choice of preferred dates (including start and end dates)
-an artist’s c.v.
-up to 20 images on CD or two videos on DVD
-a stamped, self-addressed envelope for the return of your materials
In conceiving of this residency program, MAWA hopes to increase dialogue between our geographical community-Winnipeg-and the art world beyond; to create networking opportunities for women artists; and to provide an oasis in which women artists can do whatever they need to do in order to move their practices forward.

THE DEADLINE DATE FOR THE RECIEPT OF APPLICATIONS FOR BOTH THE RESIDENT ARTIST PROGRAM AND THE EVELYN SHAPIRO FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP HAS BEEN EXTENDED: APPLICATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED ON OR BEFORE APRIL 1, 2011
Applications accepted after January 1, 2011. FROM SEPTEMBER 1, 2009 THROUGH AUGUST 31, 2011 RESIDENT ARTISTS WILL PAY ONLY FOR THEIR MATERIAL AND FIRING FEES. THE MONTHLY RENT OF $250.00 HAS BEEN WAIVED THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF AN ANONYMOUS DONOR. The Resident Artist Program offers individuals the opportunity to further develop their work, to establish professional contacts and standards, and to work within a community of like-minded individuals in an urban environment. Once chosen as a resident artist, one is entitled to retain their residency for up to five years. A residency at The Clay Studio includes:
- studio space (approximately 185-195 sq. ft.)
- use of four electric and two gas kilns
- collective buying of materials
- a glaze mixing area
- teaching opportunities and the right to exhibit in our galleries
The monthly rent of $250.00 is waived through August of 2011. There is a $250.00 refundable security deposit and a yearly Clay Studio membership fee of $50.00. Firing costs are based on individual usage. Residents share common housekeeping work and contribute time to The Clay Studio as well. 
Application Process
PLEASE INCLUDE NOTHING OTHER THAN WHAT IS REQUESTED BELOW The current body of eleven resident artists, the current Shapiro Fellow, the Artistic Director and one invited guest juror select new residents. The selection process is based upon the strength of your application. A complete application must include the following :
- a completed application form [PDF, 94K] in hardcopy
- a resume in hard copy and saved as a word document on disc
- artist statement in hard copy and saved as a word document on disc
- a personal statement (tell us everything you want us to know about yourself including your reasons for applying for a residency) in hard copy and saved as a word document on disc.
- On the word document disc, include 10 digital image .jpeg files at 72 dpi, with the image’s longest dimension not exceeding 700 pixels. Each image file should be labeled as follows: imagenumberyourfirstinitialandlastname.jpeg, Example: 1jdoe.jpeg, 2jdoe.jpeg, ect.
- a corresponding image list in hard copy and saved to disc that includes the following: image number, title, medium, size, and date. Please take note that images are projected in twos, 1.jpg and 2.jpg viewed side by side, 3.jpg and 4.jpg viewed side by side, etc. Match detail images with full images accordingly.
- PLEASE USE NO STAPLES OR BINDERS.
No discs will be returned and notification will be made via email. There is no application fee. All interested individuals are strongly encouraged to visit The Clay Studio prior to applying. All applicants will be notified by May 7, 2011. Selected artists must accept or decline residency by May 14, 2011. The residency will begin on September 1, 2011. The Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts and the Collins Living-Learning Center co-sponsor this program, which brings emerging international visiting artists to teach during the second eight-week session during the fall and spring semesters. Artists/Scholars teach a a studio practice course for Fine Arts and a theory course for Collins that focuses on contemporary and cultural criticism.

Artist Residency Program
In 1998 Mudflat began offering a one year residency position to clay artists.
This highly competitive program provides a private studio space at no cost with
access to Mudflat’s facility, and opportunities for the resident to teach and sell

September 1 – August 31
Residency includes:
- Private 100 sq. foot studio space
- 24 hour access
- A monthly stipend of $50, to be applied to clay materials and firing costs.
- Opportunities to teach in our educational programs and for retail sales at
- our Open Studio events and at Mudflat Gallery

Residency requirements:
- Artists are expected to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week in their studio
- Artists are required to work 5 hours per week for Mudflat, assisting with technical jobs
- 2 public presentations during the residency. The first, in September, is a slide show of the artist’s work.
- Applicants should have knowledge of a variety of clay techniques and some kiln firing experience, the ability to work independently, and enthusiasm and willingness to be part of an urban clay community.
