DO GOOD – MJ Wood Memorial Short-Term Residency

*We will not be accepting applicants for the 2021-22 MJ Do Good Residency. Instead, we are assessing how to adjust this opportunity to create a more pro-active and inclusive Residency for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other historically underrepresented groups. RLCC plans to have a new Residency(ies) established in the coming months to meet this goal.

residency opportunity: Green-Wood Cemetery

Green-Wood’s new Artist-in-Residence program was created for emerging and mid-career artists to directly engage with the site’s unique art, history, and nature. Since its founding in 1838, the Cemetery has inspired generations of painters, writers, and musicians. The artist selected for this program will continue in that rich tradition of creative expression.

The residency is open to those living in New York City and working in the visual and/or performing arts. Special consideration will be given to those whose final project can engage communities within the surrounding neighborhoods of Green-Wood. The artist will be provided an honorarium and studio space in the Historic Landmark Gatehouse on Fort Hamilton Parkway, as well as access to the Cemetery’s professional staff and archives and historical collections. The 9-month residency will take place January – September 2021.

residency opportunity: The Artist in Residence (AiR) Program on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

The Salt Spring Arts Council (SSAC) Artist in Residence (AiR) Program, now in its fifth year, provides an opportunity for artists to work in the vibrant arts environment of Salt Spring Island. The program is open to all professionals working in the arts, in any genre or medium, at any stage of their careers. The intent of the program continues to be the provision of time and space for creativity and productivity for the chosen visiting artists and to introduce them to Salt Spring Island and its arts community. We welcome both National and International applicants to the program.

All submissions are juried with residencies awarded based on artistic merit, available facilities, potential links to the Salt Spring community and associated collaborative opportunities.

Our residents this year are Joyce Majiski from Whitehorse, working on a multi-media installation “Song of the Whale,” painter Claudia Wilholt from Hanover, Germany, working with egg tempera on canvas, and writer Julie Burtinshaw working on her next book: Petit Treason: One Women’s Journey to the Gallows.

As in previous years, as well as working on their own projects, the artists will share their expertise and enthusiasm through presentations, workshops, demonstrations and exhibits, enriching our island with their work and ideas, interacting with Salt Spring artists and enjoying our unique island lifestyle. For information about these artists and events go to; ssartscouncil.com/artist-in-residence/residencies/

The AiR program invites artists to engage with the creative cultural community of Salt Spring Island. Within the spirit of this framework, collaborative proposals by members of the Salt Spring arts community which involve off-island artists are actively encouraged.

In 2021 the annual SSAC presentation Easter Art Show will centre on an exploration of colour, artists who feel their work, explorations, and timing might fit into this scenario should make note of this on their application.

Applications for the AiR program can be submitted on or before April 15th. 2020 for tenure between January 2021 and April 2021. Application information is available at ssartscouncil.com/artist-in-residence/

Situated on beautiful Chambers Island, accessed via a footbridge, this new creative studio could be yours, free for up to three months.

  •  A brief description of your practice
  •  Links to examples of your work

And answer:

  • Where do you currently practice?
  • What is your connection to the Sunshine Coast?
  • Why would you like access to The Crows Nest and what ideas would you like to explore here?
  • How long (up to three months) would you intend to base yourself here?
