Call for Submissions: Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics

Deadline July 31 by 5:00 pm

The Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics is a national award for ceramic artists and potters. Thanks to the ongoing partnership with Mrs. Winifred Shantz and the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery, the award is presented to a practicing early career artist who has been working professionally for between 5 to 10 years. The Award is intended to allow the artist to undertake a period of independent research or other activities with the capacity to advance their artistic and professional practice at a key moment in the artist’s career. The winner of the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics receives $10,000. The selection panel is comprised of experienced contemporary ceramic artists, potters and curators. This jury will choose one winner and the results will be announced at a gala event on September 17, 2009. This award will be presented and announced at the same time as the winner for the RBC Award for Glass.

All of the Winifred Shantz Award winners to date have represented the remarkable practices that make up contemporary ceramic art. Previous winners include: Kasia Piech (2008), Rory MacDonald (2007), Ying-Yueh Chuang (2006), Kate Hyde (2005), Joan Bruneau (2004), Marc Vincent Egan (2003), Laurent Craste (2002), Susan Collett (2001)

Artist of the day: Monica Bodnar

In Monica’s words: My last batch of work has come from a book titled “the man who mistook his wife for a hat” by oliver sacks. It’s a bunch of animals with people paraphernalia.

As the snow still exists here I’m jealous of Monica living in North Florida…sigh, will i ever wear shorts again??? Please check out her blog and etsy shop for more.

From the Pomme website:
Opening on Friday 3 April “Little Un’s”. Ceramic works by three Queensland Potters, Mel Robson, Kenji Uranishi and Shannon Garson. The brief for this group show was ‘keep it small’and the artists were only too happy to oblige with a series of exquisite, but perfectly functional cups, jugs and vessels. On show until 24 April 2009.

Artist of the day: Kip O’Krongly

Here we go folks! April is Artist of the day month, enjoy and thanks to all those that submitted, I’m really looking forward to a month of visual inspiration. Yummy eye candy!!!

Our first artist is Kip O’Krongly.

You can find out more about Kip at www.kipokrongly.blogspot.com, or www.kipokrongly.com.

In Kip’s words:

I am a functional potter working primarily in low fire earthenware at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN. I use graphic imagery to exlpore my interest in the intersection of food production, energy use and transportation issues. I am intrigued by the way utilitarian ceramics can spark conversation and serve as a medium for personal interaction and change. When I’m not in the studio, I love to bake and knit!

Thanks Kip!

It’s funny though, probably 90% of the emails I received said “oh i’m sure you’ve already got your 30 artists”…guess what? nope, not quite. Been thinking about it, but didn’t bother? Get on it!!! As I said I will keep posting until i run out of images, so send, send, send those images in! Other wise you’ll get stuck with day after day of images of my work, I hate to threaten you with that, but there you go!
Cheers!
