WEST VIRGINIA CHINA CERAMICS PROGRAM

West Virginia University has a unique linkage with the famed Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. They have teamed to offer a study and travel program in the Peoples Republic of China where students will have the opportunity to study with some of China’s most prominent teachers and ceramic artists. China’s roots in ceramic art history are strong and deep. For thousands of years, Chinese artisans have developed and mastered techniques and artistry that has set the standard of excellence in ceramics throughout the world. High fired porcelains, underglaze and overglaze techniques, celadons, copper reds, temmoku, yaoware carving, ash glazes and tri-colored lead glazes are just a few of the contributions made by Chinese artisans over the centuries.

Medalta – busy busy day!!!

I’m going to admit it to you all, i’m getting stressed! So little time left, how did this month go by so quickly? I’m already getting teary at the thought of this amazing residency being over and us all going off on our separate ways…sigh…late at night, tired, sentimental me.

But today was another fantastic day around the studio. I’ve been madly finishing a few more pieces, packed a bisque kiln of figurines as I should be getting some of those finished soon…ekk!
We packed and are firing (as I write, hence why i’m still up) another soda kiln, fingers crossed.

Oh and we had a few amazing visits today, one from the Medalta mascot and poster boy Brendan Tang (who by the way posted some awesome images from the studio on his website here).

A heart to heart on the couch : )

And another visit that almost left me speechless with glee. I walked into my studio to find the lovely ladies Louise Cormier, Elaine Harrison, and Anna Madsen. Not only was it a nice studio visit, but these ladies are actually readers of musing and of tiny revolutions so it was a blend of virtual and real worlds colliding. The threesome decided to drive down to the Hat for a visit and to see in person what Robin and I have been blogging about this month. How fantastic! That visit soooo made my day, thanks ladies!

Hansen- Ross Pottery, A Way With Clay

Mission Ridge Ski Hill, Fort Qu’Appelle
August 20 and 21, 2010

In September of 2009, the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery opened “A Way With Clay” – an exhibition featuring the work of Fort Qu’Appelle potters David Ross and Folmer Hansen. Ross and Hansen opened their pottery in the Fort in 1961 after purchasing The Craft House owned by the Saskatchewan Arts Board; which had offered classes there since 1954. David Ross and Folmer Hansen continued to offer classes for awhile, but eventually moved on to full time pottery production. Their work was a collaboration – Folmer did the wheel work and David the glazing and firing. They became nationally recognized during a show of Canadian Craft in 1967 at Expo in Montreal, at the Government of Canada Pavilion. Tragically, David Ross was killed in a car accident in 1974. Folmer carried on with his work until his health deteriorated to the point where the studio was closed. He still resides in Fort Qu’Appelle.

The Prairie Trails Arts Council, in cooperation with the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery invite Fort Qu’Appelle area residents – and beyond – to ”A Way With Clay” on August 20 and 21 at Mission Ridge Ski Hill. A reception will be held on Friday August 20 at 5:30p.m. and on Saturday, August 21, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., people are asked to bring their favorite Hansen-Ross pieces to Mission Ridge for a “Show and Tell” event. Curator Heather Smith, Ceramic Specialist Julia Krueger and well known Artist David Thauberger will be on hand to talk about the pieces. Folmer will also be there to tell his stories! Folmer Hansen is a local treasure and this event will not only celebrate his work and contribution to Fort Qu’Appelle, but also his 80th birthday!
