job posting: Artist in Residence – University of Denver’s School of Art & Art History
For best Consideration: Apply by May 24th!
The University of Denver’s School of Art & Art History (SAAH) has offered instruction in Art and Art History since 1880 and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. SAAH offers courses in Studio Art and Art History, and contributes to the Common Curriculum courses for the larger University. SAAH currently has twelve full time faculty, approximately ten adjunct faculty and serves an average of one hundred twenty undergraduate majors annually, in addition to approximately 18-20 graduate MA students in Art History. SAAH has an Art Foundations area that serves all students in SAAH, and which prepares Studio majors with the formative technical and conceptual skill necessary to advance to upper level courses. They are also popular with Art Minors and non-majors interested in Studio Art classes. SAAH has focused coursework from beginning to advanced levels in the areas of Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.
Position Summary
The School of Art and Art History at The University of Denver invites applications for a six-month Visiting Teaching/Artist in Residence in Ceramics, beginning January 2020, through June 2020. The ceramics studio has 3 electric kilns and 2 test kilns, a 24-cu ft gas Blaauw kiln, a soda and a raku kiln. In the ceramics area, there are glaze making facilities, wheels, 2 pug mills, a CNC machine and two ceramic 3d-printers (JK delta style). Additionally, there is access to plastic 3d-printers, a 4 x 8 CNC mill, laser cutter and wood shop at DUs Innovation Floor in the School of Engineering. The ceramics professor, Mia Mulvey, will be present but will be on sabbatical working on her own research. The expectation is that the bulk of the time is spent in residence at DU and travel is kept to a minimum.
Essential Functions
The Visiting Teaching/Artist in Residence will teach one Introductory Ceramics and one Special Topics Ceramics course as well as interface with SAAH students in the form of critiques and guest visits to classes. The remainder of the time will be spent working in the studio as a resident artist.
The Visiting Teaching/Artist in Residence will present their work in two public lectures (one at the beginning and one at the end of the residency) and there are opportunities for exhibition in SAAH’s Myhren Gallery. We also ask that one work be left at the end of the residency for our collection.
