Las Vegas Nevada’s Clay Arts Vegas is pleased to host “What Goes Bump In The Night 2019” a national juried art exhibition, October 3 –November 12, 2018 in the Victor F. Keen Gallery, at Clay Arts Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. “What Goes Bump In The Night 2019” will feature functional and sculptural work exploring the sublime.
This annual show explores a darker side of ceramic art and rings in Halloween in Las Vegas. Let your imagination run wild with pieces that make the hair on the back of your neck rise. From night mares to the darkness that might live in the soul there are things that remind us of when we were children sacred in the dark by things that go bump in the night.
Deadline:September 1, 2019. Participation is open to all artists 18 years of age or older. Work submitted must be original, must use clay as the primary material, must specify firing technique(s) and size, and must have been completed within the last 2 years.

The application is open to all artists 18 years and older. An artist may submit 1-3 original works, which have been completed in the last two years. Works not gallery-ready or not exhibiting good craftsmanship, may be omitted from the exhibit. Accepted works that differ significantly from the entry images or suffer from poor presentation will be disqualified.
Work may not exceed the dimensions of L–6” W–6” H–8” (including handle) or weigh over 2lbs.
Images should be submitted as jpegs and sized at 300dpi and 10 inches (3000 pixels) on its shortest side. Files should be labeled first name_last name_entry number (e.g. John Smith would be john_smith_2.jpg).
Media Restrictions:
Drinking vessels (cups, mugs, yunomis, tankards, tumblers, goblets, tea bowls, etc.) must be made primarily from clay and 100% functional with food safe glazes. Work may not exceed the dimensions of L–6” W–6” H–8” (including handle) or weigh over 2lbs. All exhibited work must be for sale. Selected pieces must be available for the duration of the exhibition.

residency opportunity: Penland Winter Residencies
Penland’s Winter Residency program is a short-term residency opportunity for artists seeking to work independently in one of our 16 studios during Penland’s quiet season. Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply for our 2-week and 4-week sessions. Shared studio access is provided to a small number of artists each session, inviting enough people to encourage conversation and creative camaraderie, but not so many that focused time in the studio is compromised. Our goal is to support artistic growth, experimentation, and inquiry in all media by offering artists the time, space, and equipment they need to promote professional development.
Penland Winter Residencies are for:
- Artists needing access to facilities for research and development that can be uniquely supported by Penland’s studios and equipment.
- Art educators who are seeking focused work time during a winter break or sabbatical.
- Two or more artists wanting to work collaboratively on a specific project or simply alongside one another in order to share technical expertise and/or creative inspiration. (Each member of the collaboration must apply individually.)

Recently I had the upmost pleasure to chat with Megan Black from the Canadian Craft Federation and Benjamin Kikkert, internationally known glass artist, on the Citizens of Craft Podcast. Join us for a listen as we talk about the makers behind the objects and so much more! This is the final episode in an amazing series of podcasts. Oh and if you haven’t gotten addicted yet to the Netflix series Blown Away – I suggest you go binge watch that one. Benjamin is on the show and creates so absolutely amazing work. I’ve only had the pleasure of working in a glass hot shop once in my life up in Whitehorse at Lumel Studios (totally worth the trip!), and can attest to how difficult glass work is. I’m always fascinated to watch artists work under pressure and time constraints so Blown Away is super addictive TV.
And I’ve just gotten word that there are only a few spots left in a workshop I have the honor of co-presenting with the incredibly talented Sue Tirrell (enter all the fan girl squeals here!). We’re going to be having a blast at the Archie Bray this September and I’d love to have you join us for this workshop!
