upcoming symposium: Made in Australia

Come and celebrate the Society’s 40th Anniversary at our three days Australiana symposium, “Made in Australia”. We have a fantastic line up of speakers including Stephen Bowers (contemporary Australian ceramic artist), John Hawkins (QLD opals in Australian jewellery) and Julian Bickersteth (conservation of Australian furniture). Richard Neville, Mitchell Librarian and Director of Education & Scholarship from the State Library of NSW will be talking about the library’s collection and showcasing its treasures. There will also be presentations from curators and our members.

Come and hear about contemporary ceramics, colonial and mid-century modern Australian furniture, convict artists, goldfields jewellery, female woodcarvers, china painting and pottery, quilts, conservation of important furniture, ceremonial maces, Queensland opals in jewellery and much more!

upcoming workshop: Clay Pots and Color Spots Workshop-with Mark Errol @ Morean Center for Clay

Clay Pots and Color Spots is an intensive hands-on workshop focusing on the development of forms as well as learning how to produce layers and layers of decorative information. This class will create a tool box of inexpensive, readily available and low-tech methods of surface design meant to draw your audience in and reward them with bountiful color, shape and designs.

Students will need to bring:

Studio tools
X-acto knife
Soft yellow round sponge
Brushes

residency opportunity: Penland Winter Residencies

Penland’s Winter Residency program is a short-term residency opportunity for artists seeking to work independently in one of our 16 studios during Penland’s quiet season. Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply for our 2-week and 4-week sessions. Shared studio access is provided to a small number of artists each session, inviting enough people to encourage conversation and creative camaraderie, but not so many that focused time in the studio is compromised. Our goal is to support artistic growth, experimentation, and inquiry in all media by offering artists the time, space, and equipment they need to promote professional development.

Penland Winter Residencies are for:

  • Artists needing access to facilities for research and development that can be uniquely supported by Penland’s studios and equipment.
  • Art educators who are seeking focused work time during a winter break or sabbatical.
  • Two or more artists wanting to work collaboratively on a specific project or simply alongside one another in order to share technical expertise and/or creative inspiration. (Each member of the collaboration must apply individually.)
