John Chalke’s ‘clay paintings’ are conceptual ceramic works that dance
between sculpture and painting. Inspired by the landscape of
southwestern Alberta no less than its local clay, minerals, textures,
and fissures, Chalke’s works are richly textured. Surface Tension draws
on public and private collections from across Canada to explore the
horses and cows, bottles and broken crockery, aerial views and
archaeology of Chalke’s personal iconography.

The talk, Ceramics + Art, Rebooted, is a continuation of the
spirited debate Clark began recently in Copenhagen and Oslo about the
forceful entry of the medium into the fine arts world. Dozens of
exhibitions featuring ceramics and clay are taking place each month and a
new canon of leading artists is being chosen and established partly
from the ceramics world and partly from non-specialist fine arts
including Arlene Shechet, Johan Creten, Sterling Ruby, Theaster Gates,
Ai Weiwei, Nick Cave, Adrian Villar Rojas, Ron Nagle and others. As
Clark explains, “the role of deciding which ceramics is now indeed art
has been totally lost to the fine arts. The question is, are they doing a
better job than we did? And the answer is often (but not always) yes.
It’s an exciting new era.”
Maine College of Art, located at 522 Congress Street in the heart of Portland Maine’s Arts District. Lecture: 12 p.m.

lecture in the MECA Cafe just outside of the lecture hall.

GrowlerFest 2015 East + West is a project that will showcase the ties between the local food movement, craft beer, and ceramic art.
Project Art (Cummington, MA) is partnering with artist Bradley Klem
(Phoenix, AZ),The Eutectic Gallery (Portland, OR) and Portland Growler
Company (Portland, OR) to bring GrowlerFest 2015 East + West to the East
and West Coasts for the first time.
Project coordinators Alexandra Jelleberg and Bradley Klem’s aim is to
create a narrative about the link between the craft brewery movement
and the vitality of handmade pottery:
Through the intersection of collaboration and individual
aesthetic, we hope to spark investment in handmade objects among a group
of people who share a common interest. The enjoyment of food and drink
can be greatly enriched by the experience of using the beautiful work
artists so thoughtfully produce.
GrowlerFest 2015 East + West intends to connect artists working in
disparate ways and faraway places to both each other and the craft beer
movement by offering the surface of a growler as a way to collaborate
with one another, and an exhibition with functional and decorative
components to draw parallels and comparisons in form, style, design
and philosophy between local and global ceramic artists.

15 ceramic artists have collaborated on limited editions of ceramic
growlers that will be on exhibit at Project Art October 3–December 2.
Also on display will be vessels by local studio potters. Participating
potters include Ben Eberle, Robbie Heidinger, Tiffany Hilton, Jeffrey
Lipton, Maya Machin, Michael McCarthy, Robbie Heidinger, Steve Theberge,
