The International Ceramics Studio is one of Europe’s longest running ceramic centers and one of the world’s most famous.THIS WORLD FAMOUS CENTER IS UNDER THREAT During its 35 years it has established itself as a centre of excellence for ceramic art internationally and welcomes artists from all over the world. It has always been at the forefront of ceramics education, supporting and nurturing a younger generation of artists.It has welcomed both Hungarian and international artists to work there with its popular artist in residence scheme, university study abroad program, mastercourses and symposia. An important international collection has been created by artists who donated their works to found this collection.The International Ceramics Studio has always needed financial support of government and councils but in recent years it has been increasing its income through the artist residencies, group visits and courses it has been organising.Due to state re-organization and financial changes, the Council of Bacs-Kiskun have decided to remove both the artistic and financial independence of the studio by amalgamating two financially unsound organizations into the studio. A new director for these three organizations, a former director of one of the financially unstable organizations and also not a ceramist, has already been appointed.One of the first decisions of the new directorate is sell the works in the collection to raise funds for this new merger. These works are a documentation of the studio’s history and should not be sold off like the family’s silver. These works were donated to the collection by artists from all over the world to make this collection. They were not donated to be sold for profit for the public purse.PLEASE HELP AND SUPPORT THE INTERNATIONAL CERAMICS STUDIO TO OVERTURN THESE POLITICAL DECISIONS.The powers that be have absolutely no idea of how much the studio means to the world of ceramics. How important the studio has been to the growth of ceramics in Hungary. How important the studio has been to the education and nurturing of young ceramic artists. Please let your views be known to show them how important the International Ceramics Studio is to the future of ceramics in Hungary and internationally.PLEASE PROTEST AGAINST THESE DECISIONS . . . . by signing the petition you agree to the following1. That the International Ceramics Studio should remain an artistically and financially independent organization.2. That joining these financially unsound organizations to the studio can only be detrimental to the future working of the International Ceramics Studio.3. Images of Your Work We encourage our participants to bring a CD of your work with you to give to our resident photographer, Kelly McLendon. Kelly prepares a slide show for us to view on the last day of the workshop. Kelly will discuss ways to photograph your work for better results. Daily Schedule Coffee is available in the main house from 7:30 – 9:00 am. Workshops begin at 9:00 am. A light lunch of salads, fruits and cold-cuts are provided. Some people prefer to go out for a lunch or, to bring their own lunches. We end the day around 4:00 pm. The pottery studio is open 24 hours so you are welcome to continue working. We have a pool and shower room off the inner courtyard. For dinner we have a large kitchen for people to cook and lots of fridge space. Laundry facilities are also available on-site. Photo Special Our resident photographer, Kelly McLendon, is available to take professional images of your work while you participate in a workshop. Forrest Lesch-Middelton
Using silkscreen and embossment transfers, Petaluma artist Forrest Lesch-Middelton, explores the use of pattern as a vehicle to express historical trends and changes of culture. Form, volume, surface and technology come together in his everyday ceramic objects that elicit a visceral and intellectual response. Forrest is the ceramics program director of the Sonoma Community Center and has taught at various Bay Area colleges including Santa Rosa Jr. College, City College of San Francisco, and Solano College. SIGN OUR PETITION Dear friends and supporters of Craft Australia, Since we were notified on 12 October that the organisation will not receive any more program funding from the Visual Arts board of the Australia Council beyond the end of December 2011, we have had overwhelming response in support for Craft Australia. We thank you for this amazing show of strength for craft and design practice. Responses have come from our readers and supporters from all over the world. We are sending you this update to keep you informed of the developments in our campaign to save Craft Australia and how you can continue to help us. WHAT YOU CAN DO Make your voice heard in support for craft and design.
- Spread the word, pass this notice on to your friends and networks, get them to do the same.
- Sign our online petition. The more people that sign, the stronger our argument for the importance of a national craft and design organisation.
- Write a comment on our blog, tell us how this will impact on you.
