Call for entry – Texas Artists

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft announces its call for entry for “CraftTexas 2012”, the seventh in a series of juried exhibitions showcasing the best in Texas-made contemporary craft. This unique show provides Texas artists the opportunity to be considered for inclusion in major national museum and private collections. The exhibition is open to artists currently residing in Texas who work in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and found/recycled materials. The exhibition also serves as a starting place for the general public to appreciate the depth and breadth of art being made in our own communities and across the state. “CraftTexas 2012” will be juried by Jean W. McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Penland School of Crafts in Bakersville, NC; Rachelle Thiewes, internationally acclaimed metal and jewelry artist from El Paso, TX; and Jade Walker, Director of the Visual Arts Center and the Creative Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin.The entry fee for “CraftTexas 2012” is $35, and applications must be must be completed and submitted online via the CaFÉTM system at www.callforentry.org by March 15.For full details, visit www.crafthouston.org or www.callforentry.org. Exhibit Dates: April 20 – June 24, 2012 The competition is open to all artists who are residents of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. All work completed within the last 2 years, both functional and sculptural, is eligible. Entries postmarked by February 1, 2012Jurors: Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio – the preeminent international dealers in 20th-century ceramics. They founded Garth Clark Gallery in Los Angeles in 1981 and opened a second space in New York, which they operated from 1983 to 2008. They now live in Santa Fe and work as private dealers. They have organized eight major international symposia on ceramic history and criticism, published numerous books and catalogs and received a number of prestigious awards, both lifetime achievement and honorary doctorates.Invited Artists: Kyle and Kelly Phelps – identical twin brothers, who work collaboratively on their narrative work exploring the topics of race, class and the working man at their studio in Centerville, Ohio. They both received BFA’s from Ball State University in Indiana and continued on to earn MFA degrees in Ceramics and Sculpture from the University of Kentucky. Kyle is Associate Professor of Art and head of the Ceramics area at the University of Dayton and Kelly is an Associate Professor of Art and head of the Sculpture area at Xavier University, both in Ohio.
