Emerging Artists Encouraged to Apply

The Society for Contemporary Craft has launched an exciting new
apprenticeship program for a recent B.A. or M.F.A. graduate who works in a craft medium. The apprentice will work full-time for SCC’s education department and enjoy access to our studio facilities. This opportunity is ideal for emerging artists looking to gain professional experience in an educational setting while building their own body of work over the course of one year. The apprentice will receive a monthly stipend of $1,000 plus a $300 housing allowance each month. Responsibilities include:
- Acquire real-world experience in the day-to-day operations of an educational studio facility.
- Teach introductory studio courses and enhance personal teaching skills.
- Be mentored by, and assist nationally and internationally known visiting artist instructors.
- Learn about marketing, pricing, merchandising and how to sell work through retail galleries.
- Create new work while having free access to SCC’s studios and equipment (the apprentice is expected to make work outside of business hours as well as document progress through postings on SCC’s blog).
- Work 40 hours per week in The Studio, with one half day set aside weekly to work on personal projects during SCC’s open hours.
- Monitor classes, and maintain studio facilities and equipment.
- Work with the public to engage visitors in the creative process through artist demonstrations.
- Exhibit new works in SCC’s Studio Gallery.

The 18th international juried exhibition is dedicated to enhancing the public’s awareness of contemporary
craft while providing a venue for established and emerging artists alike
to share their functional and sculptural creative endeavors.
Juror – Cindi Strauss
Cindi Strauss is Assistant Director, Programming and Curator for
Modern and Contemporary Decorative Arts and Design at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Houston. She holds a BA with honors in Art History from Hamilton
College and an MA in the History of Decorative Arts from the
Cooper-Hewitt/Parsons School of Design. Cindi is a member of the board
of the American Craft Council and the Advisory Council of the Houston
Center for Contemporary Craft and has served as a grant evaluator for
the Pew Charitable Trust and the Center for Craft, Creativity, and
Design.

MATERIA est un
centre d’artistes qui a pour mission de diffuser et promouvoir la
recherche et la création dans le domaine des métiers d’art actuels, aux
plans national et international. MATERIA aspire à développer la
connaissance et la reconnaissance des métiers d’art actuels et des
créateurs, dans toute leur diversité disciplinaire. Le Centre s’emploie

Sous l’autorité du conseil d’administration, la personne recherchée
devra assurer la saine gestion des ressources humaines, financières et
matérielles du Centre MATERIA, tout en veillant à la réalisation de son
mandat et au respect de ses orientations.
Principales responsabilités
o Administration générale du Centre;
o Prévision et suivi budgétaire;
o Demandes de subvention et financement;
o Recrutement et gestion des ressources humaines;
o Représentation institutionnelle;
o Comptabilité
Profil recherché
o Diplôme d’études universitaires de premier cycle dans un domaine relié à l’administration;
o Trois (3) à cinq (5) années d’expérience en gestion de projets culturels et d’une équipe;
o Connaissance du milieu, des acteurs et des produits des métiers d’art, et du milieu culturel en général;
o Connaissance des programmes et sources de financement disponibles;
o Sens développé de l’organisation, de la planification et de la prise de décision;
o Esprit d’analyse et de synthèse;
o Polyvalence, capacité d’adaptation et d’autonomie, rigueur et engagement;
o Leadership et esprit d’équipe;
o Aptitude de représentation et diplomatie;
o Excellente maîtrise du français et bonne connaissance de l’anglais;
o Habiletés d’expression écrite et orale;
o Maîtrise des outils informatiques usuels

o Permanent, 21 heures/semaine à 18$/heure
