Ceramic Laboratory symposium

Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre and Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics invite artists to participate in the 6th International Ceramic Art Symposium CERAMIC LABORATORY.

15 artists (10 international and 5 Latvian) are invited to participate in the Symposium. Within the framework of the CERAMIC LABORATORY, inspired by Latvian nature, cultural space and personal experience, participants will create unique ceramic artworks. The Symposium’s program will be supplemented by lectures and workshops, so we invite artists to propose a lecture and / or workshop while applying for the Symposium. While selecting Symposium participants, preference will be given to those applicants who, along with the creative work, have a lecture and / or workshop proposal.

Aim of the Symposium: To create unique contemporary ceramic artworks, developing an international communication platform in the field of ceramic art.

Place and time of the symposium: July 20 – August 3, 2018, Daugavpils, Latvia

ORGANIZERS PROVIDE:

  • Residency expenses in Daugavpils (catering, accommodation);
  • Working place;
  • Basic materials and tools for work;
  • Publicity;
  • Recreation, tours around the city and surroundings, visits to art and culture institutions of Daugavpils;
  • Symposium opening exhibition;
  • Final symposium exhibition.

ARTISTS PROVIDE:

  • Covering of the travel expenses to and from Daugavpils;
  • Specific materials and tools for work;
  • Donation of an artwork from the opening exhibition to Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre;
  • Donation of at least two ceramic artworks created during the symposium.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

To apply for Symposium, applicant has to complete ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM until April 15, 2018.

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE:

The Symposium Jury will consider the applications, and selected artists will receive invitations to participate in the 6th International Ceramic Art Symposium after May 15, 2018. The invited participants should confirm their participation within 5 days after receiving the invitation.

The Artist in Residence Program through the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard, offers dedicated artists the opportunity to involve themselves in research and growth, pushing their art in new directions in a dynamic, urban studio connected to the Harvard community. Individuals will have the opportunity to build relevant skills in research, professional development, technical ability, creative problem solving, teaching and community involvement through our Artist in Residence Program.

The Artist in Residence Program offers:

Personal studio space (60 sq. ft.) in addition to use of common studio space
7 day studio access
Free access to materials – clay, glaze and use of kilns (electric, saggar, wood fire, soda and gas) up to excess
Opportunities to take classes and firing workshops within the program
Paid teaching opportunities within the program for both community and academic based classes.
Solo exhibition in Gallery 224 of work completed during residency
Attend visiting artist workshops and symposium offered within the program
Exhibition/sales opportunities in two annual Show and Sales

Artist is asked to leave one work for the permanent collection
Responsible for own housing

“Out of the Mold” Carbondale Clay National XIII is a national juried and invitational exhibition of ceramic art held annually at the Carbondale Clay Center Gallery in Carbondale, CO. It is open to ceramic artists throughout the United States. It will be juried by Andrea and John Gill.

Exhibition Dates: August 3 – 31, 2018
Opening Reception: August 3, 2018
Application must be received by: May 18, 2018 by 5 PM MST
Notification of acceptance by email: June 8, 2018

technical tuesday: Plainsman Wax Emulsion

Last week at NCECA I had the absolute thrill of being one of Amaco Brent‘s demonstrating artists at their booth in the NCECA expo. While there I demonstrated how I use their underglazes for both my functional and sculptural lines of work. One thing that I found myself repeating over and over again was the name of the wax emulsion I use so I thought I’d share it here today. I carve those little black lines in my functional work through a thin coat of Plainmans Clay LTD.’s Wax emulsion R. I don’t water it down. I don’t let it sit for more then 24 hrs to dry. It works great for this process for me because it doesn’t gum up or stay tacky like a latex or rubber based wax would – thus allowing me to draw very tiny details and thin lines. I’m not sure if there is an American exquivalent, or international one for other countries. But this one is available through Plainsman Clay.  Their webiste lists all of thier distributors in Canada and the USA. Or give them a call to place an order.
