Woodfire Tasmania

28 April – 1 May 2011 Deloraine

Woodfire Tasmania 2011 is an event for potters, sculptors, students, educators, collectors, curators, and anyone else with an interest in the ceramic arts. The program will grow from the interests and offerings of makers from around Australia and overseas and be a revelation and celebration of the visions, prophesies and imaginings of a variety of clay and fire practitioners. There will be exhibitions, demonstrations, guest speakers, forums, individual presentations, films, and pre and post program offerings.

All the details can be found here on their website.

SMOKELESS WOOD KILN WORKSHOP with Masakazu Kusakabe (Japan)

. . . .
1st – 21st July, 2011 In pursuit of a greener studio practice, the International Ceramics Studio is hosting a Smokeless Wood Kiln Workshop to construct an efficient and sustainable wood-firing kiln with the pioneering kiln designer and builder, Kusakabe, Masakazu. The position and relatively large size of the firebox and the tall chimney allow for effective combustion, fast firing and excellent ash distribution. In the summer of 2010 we staged a successful woodfiring symposium under the direction of the Master Potter, Masakazu Kusakabe. In 2011 he will return to Kecskemet to lead the three weeks kiln building workshop in July.

Kusakabe sensei is a versatile artist: potter, kiln builder, sumi drawer and astronomist. His pioneering invention is the eco-friendly “smokeless kiln”, which allows artists to build woodfiring kilns in built-up locatiions because it produces very little or no smoke.

The program starts on the 1st July to 21st July and there is also time available after it to perform more firings in the new smokeless kiln. The program will run if there are enough applicants. (minimum 8 persons). Application deadline is 1st April.Find more details here.

Artist of the Day: Priscilla Mouritzen

All the pinched bowls are the same size: hand-sized – as is demanded by the pinching process. They show all the variety and movement which porcelain clay allows and which the vagaries of wood firing embellishes them with. At the same time their inate ”pinched” quality gives them life and liveliness. The works show an exploration of pattern in which echoes of my childhood in Africa can be detected.

Upcoming events @ Guldagergaard – International Ceramic Research Center.

1. Woodfiring In Late August

We will light up our kiln ‘Embla’ in August. The kiln is a big woodfired cross draught kiln. It is lit up only once a year, so this a unique opportunity.

Guldagergaard offers low price accommodation during the firing. The price for the firing itself varies depending on the space you need in the kiln.

Start up: 23rd August
