R:evolution – tradition – technology
Saturday, March 18th, 2017, 9am-5pm
Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby, BC
Registration starts June 21, 2016
R:evolution – tradition – technology is a one day ceramics symposium which addresses the ways that contemporary ceramic artists interact with new digital technologies; as a tool for making work, as content addressed in their artistic enquiry, and as a tool for connecting with their peers and the market. At the same time we investigate the relevance of traditional methods and their role in contemporary society.
Ten national and international artists have been invited to share their expertise with students and professionals in the ceramic arts. The topics of presentation cover academic and theoretical topics, as well as providing more practical techniques in areas such as sculpture, hand-building, wheel-throwing, glaze and firing technology and clay bodies. These topics are addressed through numerous simultaneous presentations of images, lectures, demonstrations, critiques, panel discussions and a topical keynote address. Theoretical presentations involve discussions of literature on the medium, including history, contemporary practice and trends in the ceramic arts.
Presenters:
Katrina Chaytor, Sunshine Cobb, Samantha Dickie, Steven Young Lee,
Simon Levin, Aaron Nelson, Ruthanne Tudball, Jason Walker, James
Watkins, Gwendolyn Yoppolo
Special Guests: Brendan Tang, Carol Mayer

Artist Talk with Robert Silverman
Artist Robert Silverman will
talk about his inspiration for “Tirana” (shown above and below), a
featured work in the GLAZED & DIFFUSED exhibition. Edi Rama, artist
and mayor of Tirana, Albania, who transformed the city with color, was
Silverman’s inspiration for this piece. After the talk, join us for the
closing reception of GLAZED & DIFFUSED.
This survey exhibition focuses on a select group of international
artists chosen for their use of fired clay and glaze pigment to convey
abstract content. Their sculpture, vessels, tile, and site-specific
installations reveal intended, abstract results using fluidity,
abstraction, & color theory.
Artists: Raymon Elozua, Peter Christian Johnson, Jun Kaneko, Jae Yong Kim, Steven Young Lee, Lauren Mabry, Sara Moorhouse, Ron Nagle, George Ohr, Peter Pincus, Robert Silverman, Linda Sormin, Toshiko Takaezu, Beatrice Wood, and Betty Woodman.

Well today’s site to see isn’t so much a website as it is a user on instagram…but follow me for a minute and you’ll see why you need to check it out.

Adam Field (of Adam Field Pottery) came up with a brilliant idea. Its one of those ideas you have to just love because it’s not motivated by marketing or sales – it’s core goal is to build community. Simple. Adam figured that it would be great to figure out a way to build the clay community on the instagram platform. Already there are tons of amazing artists posting their work, their lives, behind the scenes in their studio, what they find inspiring in the world, and well….of course their beloved pets too. But how could we get more clay artists on instagram? How about offer them the chance to find and keep some amazing pots simply by being at NCECA this year and following a group of artists who have donated work. It’s super simple to play along. All you have to do is go to HIDENSEEKAH’s instagram page and follow all 36 potters under the “36 following” tab at the top right corner of the page. Once NCECA starts Adam will be hiding artwork around Houston for you to find. Clues to find each artist’s work will be posted on their own personal instagram feed (which is why you have to follow them all not just HIDENSEEKAH).
Here’s a list of the artists whose work you could be lucky enough to find and take home:
