Cheers @ Medalta
September 1st– November 30th, 2016.
Medalta’s Yuill Family Gallery
Opening Reception- Thursday September 1st 6-8pm
We are excited to share our Medalta International Exhibition, “Cheers @ Medalta,”
with you! This year, as we launched the call for submissions on St.
Patrick’s Day at NCECA’s (National Council on Education for the Ceramic
Arts) 50th anniversary celebration, we felt there was no better theme
than celebratory drinking vessels!
It
has been great to see so many varied submissions from around the world
in ode to celebratory drinking vessels. In the end we had over 430 works
submitted which our juror, Robin DuPont, had the difficult task of
narrowing down into 140 pieces for the exhibition. Along with jurying
the exhibition, Robin will be selecting the grand prize winner of a month long residency at Medalta with accommodation!
If you can’t make it to the reception join Medalta on Instagram, where we will be posting live from the opening and announcing the grand prize and purchase prize winners.
The
International Exhibition is one of our biggest and most anticipated
exhibitions of the year, and this year will be no exception. The
celebratory drinking vessels we have received from all over the world
are a must see, and the best part is… if you see something you like,
it’s yours to purchase!
Online shop opens September 2nd at 12pm MST. medalta.org/cheers

It’s that time of year again, our fourth annual call for entry for
the Medalta International Exhibition. We are still switching up the
theme each year to keep things fresh… it started with cups… then
spoons … an ode to tools and now… CHEERS!
As we launch our call for entry on St Patricks’ Day at NCECA, the national council for ceramic arts 50th
anniversary celebration we thought the theme of CHEERS was in order.
So, show us your celebratory drinking vessels.. cheers @medalta with the
perfect tumbler, whiskey set, coffee mug, teacup, stein, tea bowl,
growler, bottle, or flask. If your vessel is part of a celebration,
whether it’s a perfect cup of coffee or a pint at the end of the day, we
want to see what you’re celebrating with.
Successful applicants will be a part of this celebration of
contemporary drinking vessels from around the globe in CHEERS @Medalta
on display in our Yuill Galley from September 1st –November 30th 2016.
So who’s our new Juror?! Well we are excited to have
a member of our extended Medalta family, Medalta Artist in Residence
Alum & Canadian Ceramic star Robin Dupont in as juror. Robin has
traveled the globe refining his practise & testing out a few
drinking vessels along the way in his research into functional
atmospheric fired ceramics.
“ Cheers! It is said that the earliest origins of
‘cheers’ comes from the clanking of glasses to slosh or mix beverages to
prevent your companion from poisoning you. I prefer to think of the
action in the more contemporary custom of acknowledging an event, a
friendship, a bounty, a ritual of celebration.
The concept of celebration is at the core of handmade pots.
Making and using handmade pots is about slowing down and celebrating the
object, the ritual, the people, the food and drink.
I am excited to have been asked this year to jury the 4th
annual Medalta’s International Exhibition CHEERS! This theme is
integral to our daily lives, in how drinking vessels can elevate a
ritual, stimulate a conversation or thought and function purely to
nourish our souls and selves.
So show us your celebratory vessels. “
Cheers!
Robin DuPont
We thank Robin for stepping up to the challenge & look forward to
working with him; he’ll have the difficult task of narrowing down the
entries and selecting the prize winners. You can see more of Robin’s
work at robindupont.com or on instagram.com/robindupontceramics

So forgive me but I’m going to diverge slightly from the usual monday morning eye candy post to introduce a project that’s been happily consuming a lot of my time lately. I assure you though that there will still be some lovely eye candy… : )
Make and Do is a project that is the brainchild of Mariko Paterson and myself after too many late night chats about our mutual desire to have a means to find out more about the current state of ceramic art in Canada. More and more often as of late I’ve been contacted by international galleries, publications, curators and the like, asking for suggestions of Canadian Clay Artists for them to look at. And it led me to the sad realization that as much as I’m a part of the Canadian clay community I also struggle to get a clear sense of what’s happening across this expansive land of ours.
This frustration led Mariko and I to channel our youthful can do attitudes and to begin the humble steps towards change. And thus Make and Do was born.
So what exactly is make and do? well….
make and do
is a new initiative to promote ceramic design and art from Canadian
makers. the group has been brought together under the common goal of
working towards greater exposure and knowledge of canadian ceramics
internationally.
We’ve pulled together 15 ceramic artists from across Canada who not only made amazing work but who already had established strong social media platforms.
Top row: Lesley McInally, April Gates, Russell Hackney, Sarah Pike, Robin Dupont
Middle: Jenna Stanton, Kalika Bowlby, Shane Weaver, Cathy Terepocki, Krystal Speck
Bottom: Marney McDiarmid, Heather Braun-Dahl, Katy Drijber, Mariko Paterson, Carole Epp
The main goal of the Make and Do website is to put a collective voice together so that as makers we can work together to help and support each other and our individual businesses. We’ll have an online shop opening on March 1st and will be curating monthly guest artists to join us in the shop every month. The website also hosts a blog that will grow to be a look into the ceramic scene across the country. Artists can get in touch and are encouraged to let us know about exhibitions, workshops and events that are happening across the country.
One of the most inclusive parts of the website and one that makes us quite proud is the Canadian Clay Directory.
This will be a long term project, but our intent is to pull together as many ceramic artists, organizations, galleries, and resources all in one place. It’s hugely ambitious we know, but it’s long overdue. Please consider contributing to the directory or supporting it with a donation. All of this work is being done by our make and do crew on a volunteer basis so your support means A LOT!
So if you want to find out more please visit the Make and Do website and have a look around. You can also follow us on instagram or facebook.
We’re also encouraging people to start using the hashtag #canadianceramics this is simple thing we can all do to help build a reference source for Canadian Clay.
I hope you’ll join us on this new adventure, whether you’re from Canada or from afar, this site is for everyone.
And now as promised here’s some monday morning eye candy from the make and do crew.
Happy Monday!

Application Deadline February 3, 2016
Overview
In the spirit of a community barn raising, this residency will bring
together emerging and established ceramic artists to create new work and
explore kiln construction, culminating in the building and firing of
The Banff Centre’s first wood fire Train Kiln.
The use of wood to “fire” clay is a continuity of technology and
tradition from ancient history into contemporary practice. The
characteristic earthen tones, ash deposits, burnt sienna flashings,
natural glaze surfaces, and spontaneous effects, are sought after in
atmospheric firing processes. The Train Kiln, named after its elongated
rectangular shape reminiscent of a rail car, epitomizes these effects.
Soda firing techniques, surfaces, textures, and processes will also be
explored.
What does the program offer?
Participating artist will delve into wood kiln history, theory,
principles of design, construction and firing process with the goal of
understanding and maximizing the nuances of wood firing and its
relationship to form and surface. Discussions and workshops addressing
clay-body formulation, wheel and hand building processes, loading and
firing strategies for atmospheric kilns, are also part of this
residency. As well, artists will have time to explore independent
projects and push their work in new creative directions through studio
visits with faculty mentors and feedback from peers.
Who should apply?
This residency is for emerging and experienced ceramic-based artists
with an exhibition record and formal training in visual arts, or
equivalent experience and recognition from their peers.
