The Studio Manager in the point-of-contact for new and current studio members, Artists-in-Residence, and students. A successful Studio Manager is reliable, organized, takes initiative, works independently, and has excellent communication and management skills. (S)he will be responsible for the smooth operation of the ceramics studio, maintaining cleaning and maintenance schedules, and enforcing studio policies. Cleanliness is very important. (S)he must be able to manage inventory and organize/initiate orders of required materials and equipment. Communicating studio material and financial needs with GM is a regular occurrence. The Studio Manager will be responsible for the administration and hiring of class and workshop instructors, as well as assisting in the preparation and operation of workshops and special events.
Red Star Studios is a growing organization, with an entrepreneurial spirit. The Studio Manager has substantial input on studio policies and programming and, as such, this position has great potential to grow with the organization.
Requirements:
-Must have experience as a ceramics Studio Manager and a desire to teach and mentor.
-Experienced in throwing and sculpting clay, as well as the firing and loading/unloading of natural gas and electric kilns.
-An overall understanding of glazes, various clay bodies, along with other materials and tools used in the ceramic arts.
-Basic Computer skills. Familiarity with Google’s suite of services is a plus.
-Must be able to lift 50lbs
-College degree helpful, but not required with sufficient experience.
Studio Manager will be provided with a studio membership, at no cost, that can be used on his/her own time.
Studio Technician/Coordinator – Apply by Email

The Studio Technician/Coordinator is responsible for the maintenance and repairs of kilns, wheels, and other studio equipment. (S)he will be responsible for kiln firings and safety, as well as the supervising and training of residents on the same. Cleanliness is very important. (S)he will be responsible for setting and maintaining a firing schedule. The Studio Technician/Coordinator will assist the Studio Manager is material inventorying, organizing and ordering. (S)he will also assist the Studio Manager in standard studio operations.

-Must have experience as a ceramics Studio Technician and be well organized.
-Experienced in firing and loading/unloading of natural gas and electric kilns. Soda and wood-firing a plus, but not required.
-Experienced in mixing and recycling clay and mixing glazes.
-An overall understanding of glazes, various clay bodies, along with other materials and tools used in the ceramic arts.
-Basic Computer skills. Familiarity with Google’s suite of services is a plus.
-Must be able to lift 50lbs

Text on ceramics has a long and rich history, from ancient pictograms scratched on clay tablets to provocative works from the conceptual art movement of the 60s and 70s. Forming Words is an exhibition designed to explore and articulate ideas within this popular movement in ceramic practice. Ceramic art has the ability to communicate without words, through touch, sight and use, making the decision to incorporate text a deliberate and potentially provocative choice. Eight Australian ceramicists exhibit works that explore how the written word furthers our appreciation of a three dimensional artwork, merging text and form to convey a cohesive idea. I am a ceramic artist living on Gabriola Island, BC where I have maintained a studio pottery for twenty years or so. Presently, I produce a variety of ceramic ware in my studio. I make functional stoneware that is reduction-fired but I also create glazed raku and naked raku vessels and sculptural forms.

As a kid growing up on an apple orchard in Southwestern Ontario, mom’s homemade play dough was my favorite thing to play with. I loved the stuff. My poor mother sacrificed her dining room table for years so that I had somewhere to create. I was always a pretty creative kid and enjoyed art classes in school.
Until high school, that is. In high school we were given the opportunity to take either art or music. I chose music. Not because I didn’t want to take art, but rather, because I was horrible at drawing and couldn’t paint to save my life. For some reason, I had always just assumed that art class in high school was all about painting and drawing, and so I avoided it like the plague. I suffered all through high school taking music classes and focusing on science, all the while wishing I could take pottery classes. Once graduation rolled around, I was off to university to persue sciences but pottery was always a lingering thought. I didn’t last long in sciences. I was horribly unhappy and knew that something had to change. I made the switch to social sciences for all of one semester but there was still something missing. I decided that if I was going to be
happy, I needed to go to school for something I always wanted to do. Pottery.
Much to the horror of my parents, I dropped out, moved back home and put together a portfolio to apply to art school. Within 6 months I was on my way to Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver where I completed a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, Visual Arts Degree in 2002.
I have never looked back. I have been a full time potter since 2005 and am currently working in functional porcelain. I have absolutely no regrets about the path I have chosen – though really, it feels more like the path chose me.

Clayworks Studio-Link and the Edmonton Potters Guild invite you to learn a variety of printing techniques to create new surfaces on your finished work.
Cathy will demonstrate water-based printing techniques, from basic transfers with rubber stamps, and introduce participants to screen printing with slips and underglazes. She will demonstrate printing onto tissue-paper as well as more direct methods of printing onto clay. She will also teach you how to make decals using laser printers and photocopiers. Her range of techniques can be readily used by both beginner and advanced ceramic artists, in any type of kiln.
When: Friday March 25, 6-9 & Saturday March 26, 9-4

Cathy Terepocki graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2004 with a BFA in ceramics. Since then she has been selling and exhibiting her work at galleries and shops across Canada. Her pieces have been featured in major exhibitions such as Canada’s Unity and Diversity Exhibition at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale and at the Vancouver Museum as part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad.
