It might have been about 20 years ago that I attended my first NCECA conference, but it’s impact was so great that it’s memories stay with me still. I truly can’t think of a more valuable experience for an artist in our field than to be surrounded by thousands of artists, exceptional quality contemporary work and some of the best minds and critical theorists in our field, all in one place over the course of 5 days.
When I recently saw a Facebook post by students at my former alumni, The University of Regina, regarding an upcoming fundraiser to help get students to this year’s NCECA I was brought back to my school days of working alongside fellow students and Jack Sures in the studio, prepping pots, platters, mugs, you name it, for a hallway sale on campus to help get us to the conference. Jack was always so supportive of students and well aware of the importance of us attending events like this to expand our understanding of the potential of ceramics into a more global perspective.
Jack passed away earlier this year and when it happened I reflected a lot on the valuable lessons I’ve learned from him over the years. The most important one being the value of community, the need to support each other, and how those bonds can truly help us achieve much greater things then what we could accomplish on our own.
In that spirit of supporting a community I set out to find a way to help these students from the University of Regina to meet their fundraising goals and be able to attend the conference. My oldest son, Elliott (11 years old) wanted to help as well. The result is the t-shirt designs below which are available online as of today, with all the profits going to the University of Regina Ceramic Students Society. Support students within our community by purchasing a shirt, and proclaim your love of ceramics to the world! : )

About this Event
The Socially Engaged Craft Collective, in partnership with the School of Design and the Arts at Minneapolis College, is excited to announce a day of workshops, panels, and participation with Cross Pollination: an NCECA pre-conference for artists and educators about socially engaged craft, pedagogy, and artistic action.
Cross pollination suggests exchange and interchange, collaborative action and genetic recombination. Craft and education, art and society are each varietals of humanity’s richest plants. We aim to speak to interdisciplinarity, remixing, intersectionality, and novel combinations while considering traditional and emergent theories of making and teaching.
A one-day participatory conference experience, Cross Pollination will incorporate expert voices from both craft and social engagement perspectives. Participants will find resources and emerging ideas for their art practices and classrooms through panel discussions, lectures and interactive learning experiences. Breakout sessions will focus on the following: Communities (Engaging in Cross-Sector Collaboration); Pedagogy (Engagement and Collaboration in Learning); Idea Generation (Socially Engaged Craft in Practice); and Logistics (the “How To” of Socially Engaged Craft including Ethics and Sustainability).

2019 NCECA JURIED STUDENT EXHIBITION
Deadline- September 26, 2018
The 2019 NCECA Juried Student Exhibition will run concurrently with Claytopia, the 53rd annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 27-30, 2019. Ceramic artists Steven Young Lee and Linda Lopez will select works for the exhibition at Soo Visual Arts Center. For the first time, consideration for the exhibition will be open to those studying in higher education degree granting and post-baccalaureate programs in the United States as well as Canada and Mexico. NCECA believes that those creating work offering new/exciting/thoughtful perspectives on the ceramic medium, expanding upon genres of creative production and inquiry are qualified as candidates for its Emerging Artist awards. An Emerging Artist may be at the early stages of receiving recognition for his/her work but is currently underrepresented through exhibitions or publications that might otherwise bring the work to wide attention. The intent of the award is to recognize, cultivate and amplify vital, new voices of creative endeavor in ceramics. The award enables these artists to reach broader national and international audiences and impact discourse in the field.
NCECA’s Emerging Artists program recognizes exceptional early career artists highlighting them to an international audience during NCECA’s Annual Conference and promoting them year round through the NCECA blog. The awards include opportunities for increased exposure through exhibition and special events.
