collective profile: The Bright Angle

What do you get when you mix a bunch of creatives together and form a new collective called The Bright Angle? You get awesome.

You might have come across The Bright Angle through their work on The Democratic Cup:

The Democratic Cup is the brainchild of artists Ayumi Horie and Nick Moen.

“The Democratic Cup is a slow activism project that uses handmade cups to encourage people to become active and engaged citizens in our democracy. We encourage person-to-person civil conversations about social and political issues. As a country, we need conversations and connections to reinforce the dignity and inclusivity of all Americans, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexuality, and culture. The Democratic Cup believes that these cups will act as agents of social change by generating positive political discourse.” – from their website.

Regardless you should pay attention to this ceramic crew as they are on the cusp of some pretty cool design stuff and you can help out at the ground level to invest in their collective dreams : )

“The goal is to bridge a gap between studio artists and the design marketplace. I believe the best way to execute this is by creating efficient systems of well-designed handmade objects where the production process is taken into consideration when designing the original model. In order to execute the prototypes for our first collaborative collection, we utilized the Asheville Maker’s space, our neighbors at The Refinery, to 3D print models for slip-cast porcelain mold systems. Beyond that, our collaborations in Asheville have involved working with local glassblowers, leather workers, printmakers, photographers, candle makers and other ceramic artists. This is why The Bright Angle is starting in Asheville, because the creative community is full of masters of their craft and in my experience we are all here to grow together.“- Nick Moen

Taos Clay Studio is a ceramic art center dedicated to the spread of
contemporary clay culture within Taos County, and across the country. We
are a community-based organization hosting lectures, workshops, and
events to promote art education and hands on learning. We foster an
environment of creativity catering to all ages and skill levels.

Founded
twelve years ago by Page Patterson Taos Clay has been making an impact
on the local art scene since its doors opened. In April of last year the
studio underwent a major change when Brandi Jessup our current owner
and director purchased the studio from local artist and entrepreneur
Logan Wannamaker. Building on twelve years of history and awesome, we
are growing at a rate we never could have anticipated!

We firmly
believe in the power and importance of arts education and its ability to
impact lives. Through memberships and classes, internships and
residencies, we build opportunities for lifelong learning and
experimentation in the visual arts.

In January of this year we
partnered with Travis Webb of Accelerated Kinetic Arts to open a second
space dedicated to bringing artists of all media together.

The
AKA Studio is a think tank for artists, business people, martial
artists, actors, dancers, and creative people of all backgrounds and
skills to come together. We create conversation and connect the dots
between media to generate both artistic and economic impact!

Massachusetts-based arts organization raising funds to create mobile clay gallery & learning center Pots On Wheels (POW!) represents the collaboration of one hundred potters to launch a KickStarter online fundraising effort. The fundraiser began Nov. 4 and runs to Dec. 1.

11.05.14 Massachusetts — Pots On Wheels (going by its acronym, POW!) is initiating a fundraising campaign through the website KickStarter to purchase a commercial-size van that will enable local ceramic artists to bring the hand-made experience of pottery to under-served communities. The KickStarter campaign is remarkable for the fact that over 100 potters have donated work to help raise support. Individuals who pledge to the POW! KickStarter will have the choice to receive an original work of ceramic art from among hundreds of donated pieces, or other pledge incentives. The POW! KickStarter campaign begins November 4 and runs until December 1.

Hayne Bayless, one of the founding artists behind POW!, said, “Having a hundred artists supporting the success of our KickStarter is very exciting. From emerging artists to some who are internationally known, their participation speaks to the spirit of collaboration that is at the heart of our mobile gallery and clay learning project.”

POW! will use the funds it raises to purchase and modify a commercial-sized van to create a flexible space for collaborative community clay projects. This van will reach under-served neighborhoods and settings where art studio and display space is at a premium or otherwise unavailable. POW! is a collaboration between several Massachusetts-based artists: Hannah Niswonger, Adero Willard, Sam Taylor, Mark Shapiro, Arthur Halvorsen, Kathy King, and Hayne Bayless (of CT) in partnership with area arts institutions including the Society of Arts & Crafts (Boston), the Ceramics Program at Harvard University (Cambridge), and Mudflat Studio (Somerville).

“The name ‘Pots On Wheels’ describes what our program will provide to communities throughout our area, but the name ‘POW!’ describes the kind of impact that we believe the arts can have in people’s lives.” said Hannah Niswonger. “In this day and age when the arts are being stripped from schools, we and our partner organizations like the Society of Arts & Crafts see an incredible need to deliver the experience of fine craft. The KickStarter campaign is the first step.”

KickStarter is an established fund-raising website on which individuals pledge donation amounts to organizations or businesses, each of which has its own page within the KickStarter site. The POW!
