save the date: CLAY VOICES Season 2

CLAY VOICES Season 2

Last year in June, CLAY Voices on Instagram, Canadian Ceramics Symposium was born in the middle of a global pandemic. This initiative was -and still is a response to the uncertainty we all artists were facing and its impact in our practice and our daily lives. The goal was to connect ceramic artists across Canada during the lockdown. The enthusiastic response revealed how much we miss our people.

Back then, 17 artists were interacting through Instagram during a weekend, introducing themselves and sharing views, concerns and supportive messages. Several months later restrictions are still in place and the second edition of CLAY Voices is taking over Instagram once again.

This coming weekend of March 5-7, an amazing lineup of ceramic artists across Canada will be live-streaming on Instagram 55 min. each. Through informal presentations, up-and-coming artists and established potters and sculptors will connect with the ceramics community. Using a mobile phone connected to the internet we will be watching the live talks from Alison Brannen, Catharina Goldnau,

Chris Snedden; Christy Chor, Dianne Lee, Heidi McKenzie and Tanya Besedina (ON); Jay Kimball (SK), Jordan Munro (AL); Lisa Creskey from Québec and Toni Losey from Nova Scotia. Presenters will open their studios and hearts to share with CLAY Voices followers some of the strategies they have set in place lately to keep their practice alive. To know more, follow @clayvoices and stay tuned.

Let’s connect, hear new voices and get inspired!

The People’s Cup Auction is LIVE!

The People’s Cup Auction is LIVE! Visit our feed @siltstudioltd to view all 47 cups on offer. Each cup closes at a designated time throughout the afternoon and evening of this Friday, July 10th. You can find essential auction details and rules in our IG Highlights. And stay tuned for more auctions to come over the summer as cups continue to roll into the studio for firing!

The People’s Cup is a community art project born out of the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a small business, we needed to find a way to keep our studio fires burning but we also wanted to offer creative respite and give back to the community in these challenging times.

Each cup was hand-thrown by Jay Kimball at SILT Studio, with the surfaces designed and carved by local artists/makers. Even if you didn’t carve a cup, you can be part of this project by purchasing a special piece to enjoy forever. This collection of cups will go out into the world, and each time they’re held in your hands or put to your lips, we hope they’ll remind you of the strength of community. We believe that the objects we choose to surround ourselves with can enhance the meaning of our lives. Beauty with purpose makes a difference.

50% of general auction proceeds will be shared between Carmichael Outreach and the Regina Food Bank. We believe in compensating artists for their labour, so for cups that are part of the Artist Series, 50% of all proceeds go to the artist who carved the design, unless they opted to donate their proceeds to charity which many have generously done.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

whatever you need to take your pieces home.
Also bring your own lunch for Saturday,

Jay Kimball is an award-winning artist living in Mervin,
SK.  His artwork explores a
fascination with the interplay of surface, form and colour.  Most of his pieces begin at the
potter’s wheel and then got through a series of transformations before
firing.  Architectural elements are
carved into wet clay that frame abstract natural forms.  Apart from one constant glaze, other
glazes are created intuitively, with years of experience and education guiding
the chemical process. His firing method is oxidation cone six electric.  This straight forward firing contrasts
the complex material manipulation that occurs during construction.
