techniques for wheel and hand-building and a surface vocabulary that
will take your work all the way to stunning.

Jason Bige Burnett brings
a little technical innovation in a very DIY way – he shows approachable
screen and slip transfer techniques that will have you layering images
in no time!

Kirsten Stingle’s
approach to the figure is both anatomical and philosophical. She will
teach you how to use proper human proportion but also how expression can
create narrative and emotion in figurative work. Plus her techniques
for heads and hands are amazing!!!

Kathy King
is a witty and informative instructor who will demonstrate how to
create story, narrative, and humor while also showing techniques to get
your work to the next level – literally – she’ll be focusing on stacking
work and using components to build – Students can hand-build or throw
for this class.

And Finally Katharine Morling wraps
up our workshop season. She’ll be visiting from England – bringing her
truly delightful technique of working from sketches into slabs. She’ll
be working with you in porcelain and she makes some absolutely
incredible work.

A week away…..

I can hardly wait…tomorrow morning i’ll be flying to Tennesse for a week away at a residency at Arrowmont. Jason Burnett, a current artist in residence at Arrowmont has invited a very cool looking list of artists out for a week long residency : the Ceramic Surface Forum 2013.

Not only am i excited about all of the creative shoulders i’ll be able to peak over and learn from, but for me it’s a perfect way to get my brain back into a head space for creating figurative sculptures. This last year, with it’s added sleepless nights and baby/toddler scheduling has had an impact on my time for getting sculptural work accomplished. Functional work for sales took over, and although it was fun and some interesting new directions were developed, i’ve been craving getting my hands and mind dirty again with the dark world of my kitsch sculptures. So this next week for me will be a week of glaze testing, surface development, and thinking and sketching and thinking and sketching some more, maybe walking, maybe some blank staring off into space enjoying the quiet of a child free environment, but mostly sketching for the upcoming year’s worth of sculptural work. I can’t tell you how much fun this is going to be. And productive i’m sure. The first full night of sleep in over a year….yah i’ll be super productive!!!

So stay tuned for more as I blog from Arrowmont!

The Lowdown: Tales from the Margin @ the Red Lodge Clay Centre.

Curatorial Statement:
The Low Down: Tales From The Margin is an exhibit of contemporary ceramics, which are bothhonest and current, reflecting narratives that are personal and shared, abstract and implied. The concept began with a volley of ideas and artists, until a group emerged whom consistentlygenerate objects that toy with definitions and tease visual, historical and/or technical boundaries. The second factor in our selection process was intent to extol the achievements of artists generating their main body of work within low temperature ranges.

Max Lehman, Carole Epp, Alex Kraft, Nick Ramey, Julie Guyot, Jason Bige Burnett and Melissa Mytty have created a spirited and vibrant collection of objects, the best of which will pull the viewer in to the tales they spin. Formal compositions pair sparse grounds with overwhelmed figures and the viewer is left to decide if the decadence is for the better or not. Some of the more obvious narratives still leave ample room for audience interpretation; and, like a visual mad-lib, we can fill in the blanks. There are elaborate dialogues between material pairings made in fantastical, imaginary worlds alongside very evident social commentary with an extremely clear point of view. This is an exhibition for a modern world with visual “sound bites” for those in search of over stimulation, however if one chooses to go deeper the conversation thread is there to pick up and carry. Perhaps this what can happen when a graphic novel impacts the oft-insular world of clay?

The exhibit is a targeted snapshot of a specific area of inquiry in the field of ceramics. A peripheral group generating more and more buzz and not just from the hum of an electric kiln. The Low Down: Tales from the Margin is a celebration of the creative exploitation possible with electric coils and eutectic compositions.
