The Artist in Residence Program through the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard, offers dedicated artists the opportunity to involve themselves in research and growth, pushing their art in new directions in a dynamic, urban studio connected to the Harvard community. Individuals will have the opportunity to build relevant skills in research, professional development, technical ability, creative problem solving, teaching and community involvement through our Artist in Residence Program.

The Artist in Residence Program offers:
Personal studio space (60 sq. ft.) in addition to use of common studio space
7 day studio access
Free access to materials – clay, glaze and use of kilns (electric, saggar, wood fire, soda and gas) up to excess
Opportunities to take classes and firing workshops within the program
Paid teaching opportunities within the program for both community and academic based classes.
Opportunities to teach in Boston area programs, colleges and universities.
Solo exhibition in Gallery 224 of work completed during residency
Attend visiting artist workshops and symposium offered within the program
Exhibition/sales opportunities in two annual Show and Sales
Access to studio equipment including slab roller, extruder, spray booth, plaster mold-making room and glaze mixing area
Access to studio lighting and background material for documenting work
Website visibility
Access to Harvard University Library and Museums with provided ID
Opportunities for participation in academic collaborations with the Harvard community
Expectations of Artist in Residence
One year commitment
Must spend 20 hours/week of time dedicated to personal work
One public workshop presentation
Provide presentations to classes
Participation in program events and special projects with the Harvard Community
Artist is asked to leave one work for the permanent collection
Responsible for own housing

Harvard Ceramics Spring 2021 online Lecture and Demonstration series, The Artist’s Studio

What leads an artist to work in clay? How does an artist develop their artistic voice and practice in clay? In this series, we’ll learn through conversation with eight multicultural contemporary artists and educators who use clay in ways that are functional, sculptural or performative. Each artist will present their work through images or a brief demo and host Fabio J. Fernández will guide the discussion through a range of topics including access, mentorship, and community.

Registration for these programs is open to anyone over the age of 18, anywhere in the world. Choose from more than 20 different topics to explore from home, including hand building, flameware, sculpting from observation, bookmaking, experimental photography on clay, glaze chemistry, tile design, and much, much more!

Mixing Mud: Claying Around Vernacular Pueblo Architectures of the Southwest

Mixing Mud: Claying Around Vernacular Pueblo Architectures of the Southwest featuring Garron Yepa (Towa, Diné) and Dr. Porter Swentzell (Santa Clara Pueblo)

“Mixing Mud” is a presentation on the ontology of Indigenous design and architecture of the Pueblo Tribes of the southwest.

Dr. Porter Swentzell, Ph.D., is from Santa Clara Pueblo, where he grew up participating in traditional life in his community and developed an interest in language and cultural preservation. He is the Associate Academic Dean, and Chair of Indigenous Liberal Studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Porter is a Regent for Northern New Mexico College and serves on several non-profit boards. He holds a PhD in Justice Studies from Arizona State University, a MA from Western New Mexico University, and a BA from Northern New Mexico College. Porter lives at Santa Clara Pueblo along with his wife and three children where he enjoys weaving traditional Pueblo sash belts in his free time.

Garron Yepa is Dine and Towa, born & raised in Albuquerque, NM. Currently residing and working in Santa Fe, Garron is an architectural associate with over 10 years of experience. He has worked on a wide range of projects including affordable housing, commercial interiors, hospitality, and preservation. He believes in culturally relevant design that is rooted in community. Garron is a board member of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AICAE), & continues to promote increasing Native enrollment in architecture, planning, & preservation programs.
