From their website: “The idea of an exhibition of boxes is not a new one by any means. It is, however, an important one for the ceramic art collector. It is an opportunity to participate in a collecting tradition that has very deep roots. Ceramic art boxes have been collected and coveted throughout the centuries. From ancient Egypt to modern times the lure of a lidded vessel seems to reach across cultural and geographical boundaries. Their almost seductive nature invites us to question what is concealed, everyday objects, or someone’s most cherished memories. For this exhibition we have invited select artists from across the country to interpret the box form. Each artist will bring to the project his or her own distinct method of surface design and construction. We invite you to consider the possibilities of this timeless art form and what might be contained within. Tanis Saxby apprenticed as a carver and stone sculptor on B.C.’s Saltspring Island before studying ceramics at the Kootenay School of Arts. In 2005, she was awarded the International Residency in Ceramics in Vallauris, France, through a Canada-wide selection. Since returning to Vancouver, she has studied photography at Focal Point Photography School and continues her clay studio practice.
Tanis’ ceramic forms embody tranquility, sensuality, and stillness-in-motion. Shadows play an important role in her creative process, from conception through to the final form and presentation of her works. In FLOW, lines and shadows are further interpreted through the synthesis of her photography and her porcelain work. The effect is a composition of form within form, of interpretation within interpretation.

Mariko McCrae is part renegade, part court jester, part activist and community builder, but indeed – all artist. Her work is founded on historical ceramic tradition, but consciously subverts away from the norm of form and function, which is an important critical practice in establishing a contemporary way of working with clay.
McCrae completed her BFA at ACAD in 1995 where she was the recipient of the Board of Governor’s Award and the Governor General’s Award conjunctly. In 1998 McCrae graduated with her MFA in Ceramics from Kent State University, Ohio. She has taught at the Red Deer College Summer SERIES program, University of Manitoba, Ohio University, University of Michigan and been a guest lecturer at the Emily Carr College of Art & Design, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design and New York University to name a few. McCrae has participated in artist’s residency programs at the Banff Center for the Arts and the International Ceramic Center at Grimmerhus, Skaelskor, Denmark.
“An Affair to Remember” is based on a story written by McCrae. Through Duncan Gare, the second character that she has created during her career as a ceramicist, she comments on the lofty topic of mass production, consumerism and recycling. Duncan Gare (a combination of two hobby glaze manufacturers) personifies the struggle between good taste and bad, manufactured versus handmade, craft versus art, and in turn the battle between high art versus low.
