Mohkínstsis is the Blackfoot word for “elbow.” Wincheesh-pah is the Stoney word for “elbow.” Kootsisáw is the Tsuut’ina word for “elbow.” While the place where the Elbow River meets the Bow is today commonly known as Calgary, it’s had many other names throughout its history, which expands for thousands of years in all directions. The rivers’ confluence is a location of perennial importance. Sprung from a small lake on the eastern lip of the Rocky Mountains, the Elbow River snakes its way through the foothills in between the mountains and the city, enriched by the mineral-saturated terrain through which it travels. The Bow River also runs from the Rockies through the foothills and into the Prairie. Both rivers have always been veins of life. Today, they provide direction, power, fresh drinking water, and a home for millions of kinds of life. The Bow is fiercer, and has historically only had two crossings; one, where the Elbow meets it, and the second, Blackfoot Crossing: an integral trading route and hunting ground, and the place where Treaty 7 was signed in 1877. Today, the Bow and the Elbow continue to provide for all of us who call this place home—they cannot be owned, nor can this land. We are required, in return, to care for the rivers in collaboration with their traditional custodians who have always, and will continue to, care for this land, and tell its story; the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai Blackfoot First Nations who have called this land home for many millennia; the Tsuut’ina First Nation, whose ᑕᓀᖚ (Dane-zaa) ancestors migrated here from the northern Peace River before Europeans settled in this region; and the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley Stoney Nakoda First Nations whose ancestors migrated from the south and since, have cared for the rivers where they begin. Many other Indigenous people from across Turtle Island also call this place home and care for it generously, and where the rivers meet is part of the home of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.

Untitled Art Society and Stride Gallery are seeking a BIPOC Outreach Coordinator on behalf of the Alberta Association of Artist-Run Centres (AAARC).

Job Description:

 The Outreach Coordinator will work closely with Untitled and Stride staff and the AAARC Equity Committee to assist in organizing a series of internal and public-facing initiatives around equity in artist-run culture and the arts sector broadly, in the Fall of 2020. As an advocacy organization for artist-run centres in Alberta, AAARC is currently developing internal work, best practices, field reports and various formats of public forums and plenary sessions. In the next year, AAARC will create communication channels for artist-run centres and the communities we serve to integrate equity and accountability frameworks, as well as support for artists from equity-seeking communities. The Outreach Coordinator will work with the Equity Committee as we create the initial blueprints for these conversations; they will assist in organizing these initiatives in the fall through sharing the responsibility for internal and external communications, including marketing and digital communications and advertising, and are expected to attend weekly meetings with support staff, monthly meetings with the organizing committee, and in-person or virtual meetings with local project partners in Mohkinstsis/Calgary. The Outreach Coordinator will assist with operations as needed. Alongside the administrative and planning responsibilities, there are contract hours earmarked for self-directed research of the employee’s choosing.

Qualifications:

As this position is created around equity work, we are seeking applications from BIPOC candidates.

Additional qualifications include:

• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team;

• Strong computer literacy including Microsoft Office; experience with database entry an asset;

• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;

• Fluent in English, a second language would be an asset;

• Experience in the non-profit sector an asset;

• Experience working with art galleries and artist-run centres an asset;

• Experience with the execution of events an asset.

 Under the terms and conditions of Canada Summer Jobs, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria: be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 3; and, be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant legislation and regulations

Remuneration:

This role will be a full-time position, 30 hours/week, from October 2020 – January 2021, at $25/hour. If full-time hours present a barrier for applicants, we are open to considering alternative ways of organizing working hours. There is an opportunity to continue this employment opportunity beyond the contract end date.

Untitled Art Society is an artist-run centre in Mohkinstsis/Calgary, Alberta, Treaty 7 Territory. Alberta Craft Council Online Auction Fundraiser

September 10 – 30, 2020

From September 10 to 30, 2020, and coinciding with the provincial Month of the Artist, the Alberta Craft Council is hosting Craft Collaborations, an online auction fundraiser in celebration of the province’s enormous creative talent and the organization’s 40th anniversary.

This year the arts sector was particularly hard hit by having many projects, venues, and sales vanish overnight. In support of our creative community, the Alberta Craft Council came up with a collaborative way to inspire, showcase, create connections, and ultimately create revenue for artists working on a very special project.

Craft Collaborations is a unique fundraising project bringing together artists over 45 artists from across the province and across disciplines to create one-of-a-kind and limited-edition work.

This unique fundraiser ensures that the artists receive 50% of the retail cost of their project. At the same time, funds raised from the auction go to the Alberta Craft Council’s continuation of advocacy and promotion of fine craft in the Alberta.

Members of the public, arts patrons and craft collectors in Alberta and from across Canada are invited to bid on artworks by visiting the Alberta Craft Council auction.

The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 34th annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Since 2017, the exhibition has expanded to include works by international artists.

HOW TO ENTER
Our entry deadline for the 2021 exhibition is September 30, 2020. Please review the upcoming schedule below for more information on the next steps in the competition.  A downloadable 2021 Prospectus is available for entry guidelines and procedures questions. Entries can be submitted online or through the mail.

AWARDS
The Greater Denton Arts Council will provide Juror Awards in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500 and $250. Winners will be determined by the juror and will be announced at the opening reception of the exhibition on February 5, 2021.

ELIGIBLE MEDIA
Works produced in any of the craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, or any combination of craft media, are acceptable. Entries must be the complete work of the submitting artist. Works can be a collaboration piece, all collaborators must be listed in the space provided on the entry form. Local, national, and international artists are encouraged to apply. Kits or commercially designed works will not be accepted. All work must have been completed within the past two years (2018-2020) and not previously exhibited at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES + ENTRY FEE
Each artist is limited to three (3) entries. There is a $30 (USD) non-refundable fee, for up to three (3) entries. Payments must be submitted online at the time of application.

SIZE LIMITATIONS
All work must be ready for installation. Submissions are restricted to a weight limit of no more than 75 pounds. GDAC reserves the right to exclude any entry that presents complex installation or assembly problems.

SALES
A 30% commission will be retained from all work sold during the exhibition. Works which are not for sale must be clearly marked as such (NFS).

PUBLICITY
The exhibition will be publicized regionally, nationally and internationally. GDAC reserves the right to use photographs or digital images of any accepted work for the purpose of publicity.

DELIVERY + RETURN OF WORK
Artists are responsible for pre-paying all shipping charges to and from the exhibition site upon selection by the juror. Accepted works must be hand-delivered or shipped according to the instructions provided in the Artist Contract. Entries will be insured by GDAC while in its custody. Insurance value for pieces NFS should reflect fair market value. No work may be withdrawn before the close of the exhibition. Sending an entry to this exhibition shall imply an agreement on the part of the sender to all conditions above.
