“Clay: A Southern Census”

The Clay Center of New Orleans seeks applicants for “Clay: A Southern Census,” our annual juried exhibition devoted to ceramic work by artists residing in the states that make up the U.S. Census Bureau’s “South Region,” which includes AL, AR, DC, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA and WV.
Open to ceramic vessels, sculptures and wall-mounted works, this exhibition will be on display January 8 – 30, 2021 in the Clay Center’s gallery space in the heart of New Orleans.
About the Juror
Ariel Bowman was raised in Dallas, Texas where her parents are both artists. Growing up, she spent a lot of time outside with animals. The undeveloped woodlands that surrounded her childhood home inspired her to create art that focused on the natural world.
As a sculptor, Ariel works in clay using a variety of mixed media techniques. Of her work, Ariel says, “I make sculptures of prehistoric animals that represent the wonder to be found in natural history. I am intrigued by animals that evolved with distinct features, such as unfamiliar tusks, strange elongated limbs, and unusual proportions. I use clay to bring these extinct creatures back to life, sculpting folds of flesh and filling their bellies with air.”
Ariel earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2011, and a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida in 2018. She has studied abroad at the International Ceramics Studio in Hungary, and was awarded the Regina K. Brown NCECA undergraduate and graduate fellowships. Ariel has been an artist in residence at the Armory Art Center and her work has been collected by the Belger Arts Center, the Florida Museum of Natural History, and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

Brand-New Worldwide Ceramics Organization Raises Money for Charity
Launching on 1st August 2020, Ceramics for Charity is striving to use the perfect mix of art, technology, and community, to organize three online fundraising events per year, with each focusing on helping a different cause.
This brand new format brings together three different experts into one platform with one aim:
From the organizers of The Ceramics Congress, the first virtual ceramic event which has had over 100,000 people, from 195 countries attended in the past 2 years and has raised over $50,000 for their selected speakers. Joshua Collinson will be running a similar virtual conference with all proceeds going to charity.
From the organizers of “Clay for ….” fundraisers series that have provided a platform for clay workers from around the world to support worthwhile charitable causes. The Clay for… series include Clay for Nepal, Clay for Queensland, Clay for Clay Community and Clay for Australia which had 477 artists from 30 countries donate their work for sale in support of the Australian Bushfire relief. Vipoo Srivilasa will be organizing a Global Fundraising Raffle, with all proceeds going to charity.
From the Curator of the First Central China International Ceramics Biennale and the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, which were viewed by almost a million people, Wendy Ger will be organizing a curated online exhibition, with all works for sale, and with 50% or 100% of the proceeds going to charity.
By combining our skills, we hope this first event will raise $100,000 for charities that support Black Lives Matter, Anti-Racism, Human Rights, and Dignity for All.

Minnesota New Institute for Ceramic Education (MN NICE) is an advanced certificate program that provides personalized instruction, mentorship with renowned makers, and professional training for artists who are serious about taking the next step in their ceramic education.
With additional options available to license space the studios at NCC, and limited work-exchange opportunities, apply to become part of the next cohort beginning in-person (with appropriate safety strategies) this September, 2020.
Now entering its seventh year, MN NICE is a rigorous program developed in collaboration with Program Head Ursula Hargens. MN NICE provides personalized professional development for artists who are serious about taking the next step in their ceramic evolution. The program is designed to respond to the changing needs of emerging makers with high-level training and mentorship in ceramic materials, history and theory, and professional practice. Through innovative instruction and individual mentorship, artists build skills, knowledge, and insight.
MN NICE includes weekly intensives as well as artist lectures, gallery tours, and studio visits with established artists to take advantage of the rich ceramic resources throughout the Twin Cities. The program strives to support emerging artists both artistically and professionally.
The program consists of three 8-week blocks, beginning in September and ending in May. During each block, the group meets for weekly seminars and visits to museums, galleries, artist studios, and lectures. Throughout the year, participants have individual coaching sessions with leading professionals in the field, helping them to focus their research and development of work. The program culminates with the submission of a portfolio and a group exhibition in NCC’s Emily Galusha Gallery.

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve been thrilled to hear a strong demand for more opportunities for Black artists and students of color at Penland.
This desire has already resulted in the addition of three new summer 2021 scholarships to our list of scholarships for people of color. They were funded by Penland’s staff, team of directors, and Board of Trustees, respectively. Our staff wanted to make these opportunities as accessible as possible, so each scholarship will cover 100% of tuition, room, and board and also include a stipend for travel and materials.
At the same time, we’ve heard from lots of you, our friends and students and instructors, about wanting to donate to a similar scholarship fund. We’re pleased now to give you that opportunity through the new Artists for Equity Scholarship Fund. The goal of this fund is to increase opportunities for artists of color who would otherwise not have access to Penland due to funding.
