Red Star Studios continues to host national and international artists through its Artist in Residence program. A residency provides ceramic artists the opportunity to expand their body of work or create a special project that may be outside the scope of their routine studio practice. The residency program gives driven, self-directed artists opportunities for rigorous professional development and enhanced self-sufficiency practices. Within the Red Star community, resident artists engage in constructive dialogue and immerse themselves in their work. Residents foster the development of the studio’s creative environment and create outreach opportunities within the local community. Outreach opportunities include teaching classes or workshops, giving public presentations, and critiques. Through community involvement, residents create educational opportunities for the appreciation and critical understanding of ceramics, thus employing and evolving Red Star Studios as an innovative, artistic resource.
We will begin accepting applications for our Artist in Residence program in January, for residencies beginning in August/September.

Foundation Resident
This residency program is open to artists looking to further their artistic and professional careers and gain experience in a working studio environment. In addition to artistic development, residents will learn about the operation of a large studio by contributing to the studio’s daily maintenance. Responsibilities may include mixing glazes, firing kilns, and ensuring the studio is kept neat and orderly. This residency is ideal for artists who have recently completed their undergraduate or graduate degrees, who thrive in a shared, communal studio environment, and are preparing for the next step in their professional pursuits.

The long-term resident has access to a small private studio.

Overview
The Banff Clay Revival residency acknowledges the resurgence of clay in contemporary art as a material of sculptural practice. In an age of digital technology where we are often detached from materiality and process, artists are returning to the tactile and elemental nature of clay.
Clay as a common material of domesticity, is an approachable and universal medium through which artists can communicate sophisticated intentions. This program will challenge artists to push the boundaries of form and tradition, collaborate, explore new building, firing, and glazing techniques, and redefine what the medium is capable of expressing.
What does the program offer?
Residencies offer the opportunity to create away from the constraints of everyday life. Participants are provided with a studio, accessible 24 hours a day, and access to our extensive shared facilities to further develop their production techniques. Knowledgeable staff are available to provide technical support and assistance.*
Throughout a period of five weeks, participants will benefit from a studio visit with a guest artist or curator, public lectures by visiting artists and guests, and demonstrations in a variety of ceramic production techniques.
Participants are surrounded by a community of artistic peers and have the opportunity to attend inspiring talks and performances by world-renowned artists, all within Banff Centre’s spectacular mountain setting.
This program is designed for participation over the entire five-week period. Variable dates will not be considered.
Who should apply?
Artists working in the mediums of ceramics and sculpture are invited to apply. Residencies are for visual artists with an exhibition record who have had formal training in visual arts, or equivalent experience and recognition from their peers.

The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery seeks a dynamic, inspiring Executive Director to lead this contemporary ceramic and glass gallery as it grows and develops new audiences with greater outreach into the community, and onto the national and the international stage. The Executive Director will work to fulfil the Gallery’s artistic vision, tell its story, advocate publicly for the Gallery and lead development efforts to support the expansion of its programs and to ensure the Gallery’s financial stability.
The Executive Director is responsible for leading and mentoring a dedicated team of staff professionals, and for building strong collaborative relationships with other galleries and community partners, locally and in a wider context. The Executive Director will effectively manage the operation of the Gallery, adhere to Board policy and carry out its strategic vision. GALLERY BACKGROUND
The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery opened in 1993 in a purpose-built, award-winning building designed to showcase contemporary Canadian ceramic and glass art. Now in its 25th year, it has recently undergone a $1.3 million renovation to bring the Gallery to a new standard of excellence. The Gallery is supported by the City of Waterloo, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, along with corporate, foundation and individual funders.

The Gallery is located in Waterloo Region, an area of entrepreneurship, collaboration, fresh ideas, innovation, world-class technology, arts activity, economic initiatives and educational excellence on a world-class scale. Waterloo is one of the fastest-growing regions in Canada.
KEY FUNCTIONS
The successful Executive Director will raise the profile of the Gallery locally, nationally and internationally; lead its artistic vision; implement its recently completed Strategic Plan; lead its next level development and fund-raising; lead connections with other galleries; lead the Gallery to more diverse audiences; communicate the Gallery mandate; advocate for the Gallery; incorporate a digital strategy into the Gallery’s offering; and manage all administrative and functional assets of the Gallery.

The Jerome Foundation has supported emerging ceramic artists from Minnesota since 1990. The Jerome Ceramic Artist Project Grant program supports Minnesota ceramic artists at relatively early stages in their careers, as they accomplish short-term, specific objectives. The program will provide three grants of $6,000 each in 2018 for projects to take place between April 1 and December 31, 2018.
Projects may include, but are not limited to: experimenting with new techniques and materials; working or studying with a mentor; purchasing equipment to facilitate an aesthetic or technical investigation; providing studio time, studio rental, supplies, technical support; collaborations between ceramic artists and artists working in other media; education or exhibition opportunities; and travel.
An exhibition of work produced during the grant period will take place at Northern Clay Center at the conclusion of the grant. Additionally, recipients will provide a brief image talk about their work in conjunction with the exhibition
The Jerome Foundation in St. Paul, MN, has supported the Ceramic Artist Project Grant program for over 25 years. The Foundation supports emerging professional artists who are the principal creators of new work, and:
- who take risks and embrace challenges;
- whose developing voices reveal significant potential;
- who are rigorous in their approach to creation and production;
- who have some evidence of professional achievement but not a substantial record of accomplishment; and
- who are not recognized as established artists by other artists, curators, producers, critics, and arts administrators.
Eligibility
Eligibility is restricted to clay artists who have completed all formal academic training by the start of the grant period (April 1, 2018), who are not enrolled either full- or part-time in degree-granting institutions (including BA, MFA, and teaching certification programs), who are not employed full-time as ceramics teachers at the college level, and who meet residency requirements. Applicants are NOT required to have a degree. The project grants require at least six months of residency in Minnesota prior to the application deadline.
Please note: a college degree is NOT required to apply for this or any NCC award. We encourage applicants who would like to make clay and creativity a continuing part of their lives, even if they do not or have not pursued it in a post-secondary institutional setting.
Previous recipients of the NCC-distributed Jerome Ceramic Artist Project Grant are required to wait three years before applying again. (A 2017 award recipient cannot apply again until the 2020 Project Grant cycle.)
Schedule and Application Process
Applications for the 2018 Jerome Ceramic Artist Project Grant program must be received by 5 pm on Friday, February 16, 2018.
ATTENTION! The online system will not accept any applications beyond 5 pm, nor will incomplete applications be accepted. In addition, hard copy applications, which can be downloaded here, must be received by 5 pm. Application materials will be reviewed by a three-member panel, which will select the recipients on the basis of perceived merit. Funding will be extended to three projects, at $6,000 each. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process in late March of 2018. Projects must be started and completed between April 1 and December 31, 2018.
