Workshop Description:
Sculptor Kyungmin Park
will demonstrate the construction of her figurative sculptures in
porcelain in this one-day workshop. Park will demonstrate how to achieve
crisp lines and clean, tight surfaces with simple tools. She will also
explore conceptual ideas and talk about the importance of facial
expression and symbology within her work. From Park, “A child’s untamed
imagination can create a new and exciting owrld out of a single object.
The combination of an uncorrupted point of view, a strong imagination,
overflowing curiosity, and the desire to push boundaries creates a very
special mindset particular to children. The adult world, by contrast,
restrains the formally infinite imagination by imposing responsibilities
and practical concerns. Society puts limits on the way we, as
individuals, can perceive things, and as an artist I an interested in
expanding these confines.”
The cost for this one-day workshop with Kyungmin Park: Free for Harvard Undergraduate students; $50 for Harvard Graduate
students; $75 for adults enrolled in a course; $125 for adults not

Artist Biography:
Kyungmin Park is
an Assistant Professor of 3D Studio Art at Endicott College in Beverly,
MA. Originally from South Korea, she earned her Master of Fine Arts
degree from the University of Georgia in 2012 and her Bachelor of Fine
Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in
2006. Kyungmin was a 2014-2016 long-term resident artist at the Archie
Bray Foundation in Helena, MT. She was also awarded a 2014-2015
Matsutani Fellowship, 2015-2016 Windgate Fellowship and 2014 Windgate
Summer scholarship by the Archie Bray Foundation. In 2016, Kyungmin
received an Emerging Artist Award from Ceramics Monthly magazine. In
2016, she was also honored to be recognized as an Emerging Artist by the
National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference
in Kansas City, MO.
Her work has been featured in many national
and international exhibitions including the Aqua Art Miami Basel,
Galerie Aqui Siam Ben in Vallaruris, France, Morean Art Center,
Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Museum of Arts and
Science in GA, The Clay Studio in PA, Arrowmont School of Arts and
Crafts, Eutectic Gallery, Kolva-Sullivan Gallery, Lillstreet Art Center,
Signature Gallery, Belger Crane Yard Gallery, Leedy-Voulkos Art Center,
Duane Reed Gallery and the Holter Museum of Art.

About the instructors:
Rose Katz
Has worked in the tile industry as a clay and glaze engineer for 10 years.
Rose has B.F.A from Alfred in ceramic art and spent many years as an independent artist and production potter.
Rose took her materials expertise to a mid-sized tile company many years ago, where she used her knowledge of ceramic materials and revolutionized the company’s materials and process. Winning awards and developing hundreds of glazes and clays in the process.
Rose’s experiences as a studio potter and tile maker, make her experience and knowledge truly special.
Matt Katz
Has taught ceramic materials for artists at Alfred University for over 15 years.
He is a working ceramic artist with a B.F.A from Alfred and M.F.A. from the University of Colorado-Boulder
He has worked as a Ceramic Engineer and researcher for almost 20 years.
Katz uses his knowledge of Art and Engineering to make ceramic science understandable for people of all experience levels.
Matt is an experienced online educator, who has crafted an online version of material studies, accessible and understandable for everyone.

This 2 day workshop explores surface
decorating processes at the leatherhard stage. Students learn how to
build layers of visual and tactile information intergrating pattern,
color, texture and image. Pre-bisque we experiment with underglaze
surface design techniques. We will explore screenprinting with
thermo-fax and EZ screens, paper stenciling, freehand drawing with
inlay/mishima, sgraffito, brushwork, stamping, texture, and tissue
transfers. We will combine surface techniques through the use of wax
resist and commerical underglaze. Expand your visual vocabulary and
learn how to create dynamic , complex surfaces. Although we will use
cone 6 porcelain fired in oxidaion, these methods, techniques and
information are applicable to all types of clays and firings.
This workshop is suitable for all levels, but some experience with clay will be helpful.
For
the hands on portion, everyone needs to bring leatherhard pieces/tiles
(4-6 pieces – recommended tile size is 6″ x 6″). Any type of piece will
work, but a flat surface such as a tile or a plate can be easier/less
frustrating to work with at first. White clay bodies are recommended.

fell in love with ceramics as a hobby, spent years honing you skills
and now you are ready to build your own successful ceramics business.
It’s easy
to build a successful ceramics business in the beginning. There are few
barriers to entry, startup expenses are modest and you can often sell
your work with little initial effort. The problems begin when your
friends and family have exhausted their immediate need for pottery.
Running a
profitable pottery business requires both sound business skills and a
high-quality, desirable product line. You have to understand what makes
your products unique, and create a plan for creating and selling them at
scale. This three-day live online workshop is designed to help you
build a successful business designing, producing and selling ceramics.
We have
brought together three successful ceramic artists to give you an inside
look at how they built their businesses. They will share some of the
insights and strategies that made them successful, and answer any
questions you have about building your own ceramics business. The
