Old and practical.


I remember earlier on in my relationship with my mother in law, she would shake her head at me and tell my husband not to believe me when I asked for practical gifts for birthdays and holidays. Anyone claiming to really want that ceramic weight scale for Christmas must surely be nuts. But it has always been the case that some of my favorite gifts to date have been incredibly useful. One of the first Christmases that my husband and I were dating he bought me a banding wheel (oh it must be love!). Since then some of the more notable ones have included a sewing machine and gorgeous old used serger. My inlaws have even accepted my practicality and this year gifted me with some flooring for the studio and extra gloves. And earlier this week, oh to my excitement my lovely husband brought home a ware cart for me for my birthday. I can barely wait to get that sucker filled up with pots. Perfect timing too right as spring sale season kicks into high gear.

Speaking of sales I’ve got an upcoming one this weekend here in Saskatoon. A collective, flock & gather, that I’m a member of is hosting a lovely little sale and if you’re in our neck of the woods please do stop by.

In this conference we will look at the internationalizing of the ceramics studio practice and the effect that it has on us as makers. The Vitrified Print – Post-Conference Workshops and Demonstrations by Paul Scott Paul Scott is well known for his research into the graphic nature of ceramic surfaces – through his work, exhibitions, books (Ceramics and Print and Painted Clay) and workshops held around the world. Vitrified Print courses have formed an important part of the developing knowledge in the field, and are well known for being hugely informative and enjoyable. These workshops and demonstrations examine the potential of print processes in ceramics. Vitrified Print 1 – Relief, mono-print and lithography, the principles of transfer technologies:
The course uses drawing, painting, stamps, photocopy and toner resist to explore the principles and possibilities of some of the following: mono-printing, lithography and low-tech ceramic transfers. During workshops participants can produce relatively complex and rich graphic ceramic surfaces by layering, and building on interlinking skills and processes. The possibilities of transferring these techniques to glass can also be explored if there is interest. Materials include paper, laserprint/photocopy, tissue, and plaster as transfer materials with a variety of easily available print media.
May 9 – 13 | $395 + GST | Course # 1553 Vitrified Print 2 – Screen printing – direct and transfer printing:
A second, additional workshop is also offered on screen-printing and ceramics. This examines artwork preparation for screens, principles of ceramic decal making, as well as flexible, waterbased transfer methodologies.
May 16 – 20 | $395 + GST | Course #1554 Workshops will run Monday to Friday from 9 am – 4 pm. All courses include a number of illustrated presentations variously examining practice in the field – involving technical, historical and critical issues.
