“Fall has fell here in Saskatoon, and with the new season comes great new events being put on by your community radio station! We’re really excited to present to you the very first CFCR Community Radio Craftacular, taking place October 29th & 30th at Grace Westminster United Church basement. What the devil is a “Craftacular,” you ask? Well, we wanted to highlight all the great crafters and artisans from right here in Saskatoon and area, so we thought we’d get a bunch of them together in a sort of alternative craft fair. You’ll find all sorts of goodies, from jewelry to ceramics to knitting to books to framed art to knicks, knacks and paddy whacks. It will be a great one-stop for all your early holiday shopping. And, since it’s in a church basement, we thought what better food to serve than perogies from the fine folks at local Saskatoon perogy maker Baba’s? You’ll surely smell the delicious sauteed onions as soon as you come down the stairs, so be sure to get yourself a plate. There will also be beverages, muffins from Earthbound Bakery and other delicious desserts available. The whole thing starts on Friday, October 29th from 5-9pm and picks up again on Saturday the 30th, from 9am-8pm, closing early enough for all the kids to go trick-or-treating! Admission is FREE and there will be door prizes and a 50/50 draw, so you might come out ahead just for attending! Vendor space is almost full, but if you are interested in participating as a seller, email our Program Director, Jay Allen at [email protected] for more information.”

“In the Red” is a budgetary term originating from the traditional practice of showing negative numbers in red ink. In 2010 five million dollars was cut from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts budget and we must now ask ourselves how these cuts will affect the cultural voice of Alberta. In the Red will explore the impact of these cuts on an artist’s ability to create; in essence how do you craft something out of nothing?
Questions for reflection on the theme: -How does the concept of creation from deficit manifest in contemporary craft?
-How do these cuts affect your studio practice? Your exhibitions? Your community?
-How would you interpret Alberta’s new brand “Freedom to create, spirit to achieve”? This call is open to current & former Alberta artists working in all fine craft mediums.
Your submission should include:
– a brief statement on how your piece(s) relates to the theme of the exhibition
– up-to-date cv, artist statement & bio
– good quality digital images of your work (4×6 -300 dpi jpg)
– image list that includes; title, medium and techniques used, date created, dimensions and image credit.
This submission can be sent via email or mail. Email: [email protected] Mail: Alberta Craft Council

From the site:
“Prairie Excellence is a unique and ground-breaking joint project of the Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta Craft Councils. The competition and exhibition, accompanied by awards, a catalogue, a website, and a multi-province tour, involved several years of idea generation, negotiation, planning, fundraising, administration, shipping and handling, photography, design and other duties by boards, staff and volunteers from all three councils. It entailed the participation of more than 160 craft artists across three provinces. Indeed, there were a few occasions when the entire idea seemed simply too much. But the risk and the work of countless people paid off.”
