The amazing artists Jasna Sokolovic and Noel O’Connell aka These Gray Days will be hosting some upcoming masters’ ceramic workshops that you won’t want to miss.
“We are pleased to announce that we are now beginning to hold masters’ workshops at our studio on Granville Island. Our intention is to offer intensive hands-on instruction, focusing on building skill sets with concrete objectives. They are designed to move students through a rapid progression of understanding in the medium. No previous experience is necessary for introductory courses, but students with experience are welcome. For more advanced courses, we ask that students take the introductory courses first or demonstrate their level of experience. The courses will be offered once per week and in four-week segments (although this may vary from one course to another).
Our first courses will begin Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012. Each class will be from 7pm to 10pm once per week on its given day. Space is limited (4 to 5 per class) and classes are filling up fast, so contact us right away to secure your spot.”

“Thank you! Come again” by Cathy Terepocki @ Elsie Scherle Art Gallery
There is something adventurous and exciting when you have the freedom to explore an abandoned site with memorabilia left behind, a depiction of a life once lived. This exhibition was inspired by a visit to a remote and abandoned hamlet of Bents, Saskatchewan. Artist Cathy Terepocki became fascinated by the buildings in their various states of decay as well as the artifacts left behind as a testament to a bygone rural era. Even more so, she was surprised by how many artifacts had been left knowing that in other parts of the country they would be vandalized and pilfered.
Terepocki’s desire to maintain this historical site and the belongings left behind led her to create free souvenirs for the town in the hopes that by placing the pieces out there that visitors would take a cup and leave the other objects untouched. Terepocki draws parallels between the history of ceramics, the factory made ceramic object, and the desire to preserve memory, time and experience.

From Oven and Kiln 2012 Silent Auction and Awards Ceremony

Join us for a memorable evening of dinner followed by a silent auction of works by some of British Columbia’s most celebrated ceramic artists. The online auction catalogue will be available as of April 1, 2012.
The evening will also include the presentation of the NWCF Award, the recipient artist talk, as well as the parade and exchange of unique dessert plates made by local potters for each guest to take home.
The proceeds of this bi-annual fundraiser support the NWCF Speaker Series, the Canadian Clay Symposium, the Maureen Wright Scholarship Fund and the prestigious annual NWCF Award for excellence in the ceramics arts.
Founded in 1998 by John Cloutier, Keith Rice-Jones and the PGBC Board, the From Oven and Kiln silent auction and dinner has become our main fundraising event. Funds raised through the Oven and Kiln Auction/Dinner supported the Jumpstart Scholarships, and continue to support the Maureen Wright Scholarships and, beginning in 2009, the NWCF Award.

It’s pretty much impossible to be around the ceramic community in Canada or otherwise without some knowledge of Robin Hopper, either through books or videos or in person. It was earlier on in my clay career that my parents took me on a trip out to visit Robin’s studio in Metchosin on Vancouver Island. To say that it presented me with an idealistic version of life as a potter is to say the least. Robin and his wife Judi Dyelle have likely one of the most impressive studio/gallery/gardens out there. A creative paradise for sure. My own studio reality is a far cry from what I saw there, but the memory still gives me hope of someday moving to better accomodations than my gasoline stained and drafty garage studio.
Robin’s knowledge of ceramics and list of accomplishments is far reaching, his impact on the community far greater than he likely realizes. And so it was with great pleasure that I discovered he had started a blog to share his wealth of knowledge. So I encourage you to take some time to stop by, give him some feedback, have a chat and learn from this contemporary master.
