McKnight Artist in Residence: Kathryn Finnerty

Residency: January – February 2016

Artist lecture: January 19, 2016

Join
us in welcoming McKnight Residency recipient Kathryn Finnerty, who will
be with us in January and February, 2016. Finnerty was invited to the
McKnight Residency program through a nominative process involving past
resident artists and other leaders in the field of ceramics. While in residence, Finnerty will provide a free lecture about her work on Tuesday, January 19, at 6:30 pm in NCC’s Library.

Finnerty’s
work draws inspiration from 19th century English pottery, particularly
Victorian majolica, with classically inspired designs, raised-line
relief, and sprig and sgraffito images. Her current body of work is
evolving through an “abstracted landscape narrative,” and involves
larger, slab-constructed vessels; her use of bright, harmonious colors
is evident throughout.

Kathryn Finnerty has owned Pleasant Hill
Pottery in Eugene, Oregon since 2000, where she also teaches at Lane
Community College. Finnerty has recently had solo exhibitions at
Schaller Gallery and Red Lodge Clay Center. She has contributed to many
other exhibitions, including at Santa Fe Clay, LUX Center for the Arts,
James Renwick Alliance of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the American Pottery Festival at
NCC. Her work is carried by AKAR Gallery, Pewabic Gallery, and The Clay
Studio Philadelphia, and several others. Finnerty’s exquisitely
decorated surfaces have been featured in Making Marks: Discovering the Ceramic Surface (Robin Hopper, 2004) and others, including 500 Teapots (vol. 1, 2002, and vol. 2, 2013) and 500 Pitchers (2005).

We hope you will join us January 19 for this lecture, and to welcome Kathryn Finnerty to NCC!  Refreshments will be provided.

This
program is sponsored by the McKnight Foundation and reflects the
Foundation’s interest in supporting outstanding individual ceramic
artists who have proven their abilities, and are at a career stage that
is beyond emerging.

Artist Talk with Robert Silverman
Artist Robert Silverman will
talk about his inspiration for “Tirana” (shown above and below), a
featured work in the GLAZED & DIFFUSED exhibition. Edi Rama, artist
and mayor of Tirana, Albania, who transformed the city with color, was
Silverman’s inspiration for this piece. After the talk, join us for the
closing reception of GLAZED & DIFFUSED.

Closing Reception for GLAZED & DIFFUSED

This survey exhibition focuses on a select group of international

abstract content. Their sculpture, vessels, tile, and site-specific
installations reveal intended, abstract results using fluidity,
abstraction, & color theory.

Artists: Raymon Elozua, Peter Christian Johnson, Jun Kaneko, Jae Yong Kim, Steven Young Lee, Lauren Mabry, Sara Moorhouse, Ron Nagle, George Ohr, Peter Pincus, Robert Silverman, Linda Sormin, Toshiko Takaezu, Beatrice Wood, and Betty Woodman.

3D printing @ Northcote Pottery Supplies with Alterfact

Alterfact
is an design studio created by Lucile and Ben in 2014. Since graduating
from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2013, Lucile and Ben have worked
in tandem on various issues in different mediums. Alterfact explores
current and future issues and translates them into experiences,
installations and objects. They conduct critical research with materials
and data, and invite the viewer into their world. Our
background is in design, and we have a critical approach to making.
This means that we consider the manufacture of ‘stuff’: where it is
coming from and where it is going; how it is made and how it will be
used. Within Alterfact, Ben is more academic and research based, whereas
Lucile conducts more material research and translation to objects.

Lucile
and Ben’s residency project @ Northcote Pottery Supplies was to build their own 3D Printer and
create a series of unique ceramic tableware using the printer. They
are harnessing the irregularities of 3D printing and working within its
limitations to create work that is pretty exciting and it has garnered a
lot of interest.
