Artist Studios at Mudflat

In our new facility, Mudflat has expanded our studio artist program to
include more clay artists in a broader range of studio spaces and at a
variety of prices. We now have 2 types of artist categories: Resident
Artists and Associate Artists.

  • Resident Artists are professional clay artists who have the
technical skill and experience to fire their own work in the studio
kilns. Studios for Resident Artists are private individual spaces or
shared studios with 1 other artist, or with 3 other artists. Monthly
rents range from $200-$305 per artist..
  • Associate Artists are serious clay students looking for more
access, privacy and shelf space. There are 2 large group studios of
approximately 285 square feet each to be shared by 6 artists each. These
studios are equipped with a work table and shelving unit for each
artist plus a central work table and 1 pottery wheel in each studio
room. Associate Artists’ work will be fired by Mudflat technicians.
Monthly rents are $225 per artist..

Both Resident Artists and Associate Artists have 24 hour studio
availability, and use of other studio and classroom equipment. The
monthly rent does not include clay materials, glazes or firings, but
clay, glazes and firings may be purchased through Mudflat for additional
fees. A committee reviews all applications based on the following
criteria: Applicant’s level of professionalism, artistic quality of
work, and commitment to the Mudflat community.

Why apply for a residency at the Bray?

What defines a Bray residency and the reasons for doing one turn out to be as varied and unique as the individuals involved. Some artists come to develop a portfolio for graduate school, some use their residency as a transition from school to establishing their own studio and others see it Kenyon Hansenas a chance to escape from daily routine and recharge their creative enthusiasm. For all artists, it is a period of time to focus intensely on their work, explore new ideas and techniques, and push their artwork to new levels.

Probably
the most important reason for coming to the Bray is the opportunity to
work within a community of artists actively creating art. Artists from
around the world come to work at the Bray, bringing with them a vast
range of experiences and diverse esthetics approaches.

New residents are chosen once a year in March by the Bray’s
director and two additional rotating jurors. The selections are based on
the quality of the work, its artistic merit, and the diversity and
experience of the prospective group. The Bray studio program is
minimally structured, with no formal critiques or syllabi unless
initiated by the artists. Resident artists are expected to be
self-motivated and help out with various tasks around the Bray.

Residency Opportunities

There are three general residency options at the Archie Bray Foundation–long-term
fellowship (1-2 years), short-term summer resident between July and
October (3-4 months) or short-term resident between October and June
(1-3 months). On a regular basis there are a total of 10 long-term
residents and 10 short-term summer residents.

Sunshine CobbStudio space is provided free to all residents.
Resident Artist expenses include the cost of materials and firing but
are subsidized by the Bray and offered at reduced prices. Residents are
responsible for their own housing and living expenses while in Helena,
but are given use of the community kitchen space in the Resident Center.

For more images and information on the resident facilities click here or check out our web site at www.archiebray.org/residence_program.

Fellowships

Each
fellowship awards $5,000 to support a long-term resident artist who
demonstrates exceptional merit and promise. The Fellows are expected to
embrace the Bray experience of community and creative exchange, and have
the opportunity to focus their attention to produce and exhibit a significant body of work during their residency.

Jonathan ReadCurrently
at the Bray, there are six private individuals who have each committed
to providing fellowships for long-term residents. With the help of a
grant received in 2012 from the Windgate Charitable Foundation, four
more fellowships will be awarded, allowing all ten long-term residents
to receive fellowship support.

To apply for a fellowship check the appropriate box on your
Residency Application form and include a letter of intent stating you
artistic goals and interest in the Bray Fellowship program.

Land Art / Land Architecture
is designed to bring together artists and architects from different
countires to explores the relationship between land art and land
architecture to create fired ceramic structures at Abetenim Arts Village
in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Project starts with site-specific tours
to immerse the group in the dialectics of observing, analyzing and
drawing on the local conditions to generate a contextually sound piece.
The group will then work together to complete the design process and
create a land art, an earth monument to be built with earth and other
materials from the site.

This is an experimental project that
explores the relationship between land art and land architecture as
basis for constructing green earthworks or fired earth structures. The
wall of the structure may therefore be created with red earth and roofed
conventionally, or the roof rendered of earth (mud) together with the
wall and fired as terra cotta. If the project is to be of terra cotta, a
bio-form such as an onion, mushroom or the anthill ought to be hollowed
out. Wherein, we will stack firewood and smaller clay pieces. We will
then fire the whole unit as in terra cotta. The smaller pieces can be
installed as parts of the whole, or as takehome pieces, or for
exhibition regionally or internationally to share the results with the
wider public. We will use 4 weeks to complete the project. An
international participants with only 2 weeks to spare may join or leave
at a time in line with other commitments. A ceramic professor at the
nearby university will join the group for local advisory. Some
indigeneous potters are available to assist with the making and the
firing of the pieces to the desired 960° C to reach red heat.
