Applications accepted after January 1, 2011. FROM SEPTEMBER 1, 2009 THROUGH AUGUST 31, 2011 RESIDENT ARTISTS WILL PAY ONLY FOR THEIR MATERIAL AND FIRING FEES. THE MONTHLY RENT OF $250.00 HAS BEEN WAIVED THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF AN ANONYMOUS DONOR. The Resident Artist Program offers individuals the opportunity to further develop their work, to establish professional contacts and standards, and to work within a community of like-minded individuals in an urban environment. Once chosen as a resident artist, one is entitled to retain their residency for up to five years. A residency at The Clay Studio includes:

  • studio space (approximately 185-195 sq. ft.)
  • use of four electric and two gas kilns
  • collective buying of materials
  • a glaze mixing area
  • teaching opportunities and the right to exhibit in our galleries

The monthly rent of $250.00 is waived through August of 2011. There is a $250.00 refundable security deposit and a yearly Clay Studio membership fee of $50.00. Firing costs are based on individual usage. Residents share common housekeeping work and contribute time to The Clay Studio as well.

Application Process

PLEASE INCLUDE NOTHING OTHER THAN WHAT IS REQUESTED BELOW The current body of eleven resident artists, the current Shapiro Fellow, the Artistic Director and one invited guest juror select new residents. The selection process is based upon the strength of your application. A complete application must include the following :

  • a completed application form [PDF, 94K] in hardcopy
  • a resume in hard copy and saved as a word document on disc
  • artist statement in hard copy and saved as a word document on disc
  • a personal statement (tell us everything you want us to know about yourself including your reasons for applying for a residency) in hard copy and saved as a word document on disc.
  • On the word document disc, include 10 digital image .jpeg files at 72 dpi, with the image’s longest dimension not exceeding 700 pixels. Each image file should be labeled as follows: imagenumberyourfirstinitialandlastname.jpeg, Example: 1jdoe.jpeg, 2jdoe.jpeg, ect.
  • a corresponding image list in hard copy and saved to disc that includes the following: image number, title, medium, size, and date. Please take note that images are projected in twos, 1.jpg and 2.jpg viewed side by side, 3.jpg and 4.jpg viewed side by side, etc. Match detail images with full images accordingly.
  • PLEASE USE NO STAPLES OR BINDERS.

No discs will be returned and notification will be made via email. There is no application fee. All interested individuals are strongly encouraged to visit The Clay Studio prior to applying. All applicants will be notified by May 7, 2011. Selected artists must accept or decline residency by May 14, 2011. The residency will begin on September 1, 2011. Program for International Visiting Artist-in-Residence (PIVA)

Now accepting applications for the Spring 2012 semester. Deadline: April 15, 2011.

The Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts and the Collins Living-Learning Center co-sponsor this program, which brings emerging international visiting artists to teach during the second eight-week session during the fall and spring semesters. Artists/Scholars teach a a studio practice course for Fine Arts and a theory course for Collins that focuses on contemporary and cultural criticism.

Mudlat Artist Residency Program

Artist Residency Program

In 1998 Mudflat began offering a one year residency position to clay artists.
This highly competitive program provides a private studio space at no cost with
access to Mudflat’s facility, and opportunities for the resident to teach and sell

September 1 – August 31

Residency includes:

  • Private 100 sq. foot studio space
  • 24 hour access
  • A monthly stipend of $50, to be applied to clay materials and firing costs.
  • Opportunities to teach in our educational programs and for retail sales at
  • our Open Studio events and at Mudflat Gallery

Residency requirements:

  • Artists are expected to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week in their studio
  • Artists are required to work 5 hours per week for Mudflat, assisting with technical jobs
  • 2 public presentations during the residency. The first, in September, is a slide show of the artist’s work.
  • Applicants should have knowledge of a variety of clay techniques and some kiln firing experience, the ability to work independently, and enthusiasm and willingness to be part of an urban clay community.

MEDALTA 2011 JULY with Sukjin Choi July 4th – 31st 2011 This residency will be led by invited artist Sukjin Choi and is intended for artists who are comfortable working independently within a group setting. Sukjin Choi is a Korean artist, educator and writer currently working in Virginia. (12 spaces available) Imagine the smell of fresh baked bread coming from your very own outdoor bread oven. This can be a possibility after taking this two day workshop where you will go through the step by step process of building an outdoor bread oven at Medalta. Participants will discover all aspects of building including design, site preparation, and basic masonry techniques. This is a unique opportunity to participate in a collective building project and leave with the skills to build your own oven.

(12 spaces available) In this 10 day workshop artists will be introduced to all aspects of the mould making process. Starting with prototyping, the class will move through the development of simple one piece moulds and move on to more complex multi-piece moulds. Students will have the opportunity to make many types of moulds and try many different techniques under the watchful eye of a master craftsman. The course will conclude with an introduction to slip-casting. The workshop is suitable for artists at all levels of ability.

(12 spaces available) This ten-day workshop focuses on the connection between the food we cook and the pottery we cook and serve it in. The emphasis of the workshop is on repetition, focus, and getting the details right. We will divide our time between the (improvised) bakeshop and the pottery studio, using the philosophy of mindfulness and creativity through practice and repetition. In the kitchen, our focus is on artisan hearth breads. Learn how to improvise a hearth oven in your home oven, and how to mix, ferment, shape, and bake beautiful loaves using simple natural ingredients and time. In the ceramics studio, choose a form (or 2) to practice and develop and delve into the details of scale, weight, proportion, edges, and surface. In between we find the connections between food and pots, how they converse and strengthen each other. The workshop will be punctuated with daily demo’s, tastings and discussions, all intended to make you consider the humble objects you make for daily use and consumption more deeply and fully. ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE AT RED DEER COLLEGE



Red Deer College has expanded its Visual Arts facility in the newly opened Center for Visual Art in the Four Centers Building and now has three purpose built Artist-in-Residence Studios. The studios are designed to attract artists to Red Deer and to give an opportunity for emerging and professional artists alike to engage in research in an inspiring environment with equipment that they would not otherwise have access to. The ambition of the program is to promote meaningful interaction between the students, the resident artists and the community at large. The AIR studios are available during two 15 week periods; September to December and January to April coinciding with the academic year.


IMMERSE YOURSELF
The new studios are designed to offer interested artists an opportunity to chart some new territory by stepping outside of their usual studio routine. Through the interaction with students and staff in the Visual Art Department and beyond the resident artist can take advantage of the opportunity to research and produce new work that contributes to their discipline. Collaborations across media and with the RDC’s Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing, where there is access to rapid prototyping, water-jet cutting, and CNC milling offer up possibilities that will prove to be fruitful and position RDC to be a destination for innovative art research.

Who is Eligible?
We are interested in hosting both emerging and established artists of all disciplines, practices, and nationalities. Artists applying should have a current and active practice and have completed their basic training and able to work in a self-directed manner.
