A household name in the Canadian ceramic scene, Brendan Tang is finishing up a residency at the Burrard Arts Foundation which surprisingly takes him a step away from the work he’s gained so much recognition for. It’s always exciting to watch established artists take risks and challenge themselves, and their audiences, creatively. Make sure to catch his latest exhibition, opening this thursday the 11th and running till March 10th. There’s a great write up on the Burrard Arts Foundation site about this new series and some background for those new to his work.
CBC Arts also recently caught up with the artist in his studio in Vancouver. Make sure not to miss this behind the scenes look at Tang’s Manga Ormolu series and how it lead him to his new cloud series meatspace at Burrard Arts Foundation. And check out more of Brendan’s work on his website.

DEC 15th Deadline
The Woskob Family Gallery is delighted to announce an open call for the upcoming exhibition Tiny Acts Topple Empires. The exhibition will be curated by guest curator Heather Darcy Bhandari.
Bhandari invites artists to consider the manifold expressions of rebellion, and how they might be manifested in contemporary art. The exhibition takes its title from a quote in a 2004 essay by Danusha Goska, in which she writes, “when we study the biographies of our heroes, we learn that they spent years in preparation, doing tiny, decent things before one historical moment propelled them to center stage and used them to tilt empires.” The curator will consider work that engages with all types of rebellion: formal, material, political, and otherwise. Artworks engaging with notions of rupture, disruption, and change are sought. The works selected will be on display at the Woskob Family Gallery in downtown State College, PA from March 29 – June 2, 2018.
Heather Darcy Bhandari is a New York City-based curator, writer, and arts advocate. Her book Art/Work, written with Jonathan Melber, will be published in its second edition by Free Press this month. Bhandari was a Director at Mixed Greens gallery in New York City from 2000 to 2016 before becoming Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, New York. Bhandari is currently developing independent curatorial projects, teaches at Brown University, and serves on the board of directors of visual art at Omi International Art Center.

Steven Heinemann: Culture and Nature
On now till Jan 21, 2018
Curated by Rachel Gotlieb
From the Gardiner Museum Site:
For the past thirty-five years, acclaimed Canadian artist Steven Heinemann has transformed the medium of ceramics in Canada. Working in varying scale, Heinemann explores the paradoxes between culture and nature, deliberation and chance, interior and exterior surfaces.
This first major retrospective examines Heinemann’s fascinating and evolving process to reveal how he uses form, texture, pigment, and imagery to achieve his wondrously tactile bowls, pods, and other universal shapes that embody the polarities between life and nature.
Heinemann’s process can stretch over months or even years, firing a piece multiple times, and reworking the surface by sandblasting, scratching, polishing, and stenciling to evoke glyph-like imagery. His studio is evoked in the gallery through an installation of sketchbooks and source material, including original photographs and a wall of ceramic test tiles. A time-lapse video shot by the artist documents a treated clay surface as it dries, warps, and cracks according to chance and calculation.
