call for artists: Gardiner Museum Ceramic Sculpture Competition
The Gardiner Museum’s Ceramic
Sculpture Competition is challenging artists from across the country
working in all mediums to create a new Toronto landmark using clay. The
monumental sculpture will be installed in front of the Museum on Queen’s
Park, along the busy Bloor and Avenue Road Corridor, joining the Jun
Kaneko “head” as a focal point of the Museum’s plaza.
The
winning sculpture will be selected by a five-person jury made up of
artist and novelist, Douglas Coupland; Director of the Power Plant
Contemporary Art Gallery, Gaëtane Verna; Associate Dean of OCAD
University, Michael Prokopow; Gardiner CEO and Executive Director,
Kelvin Browne; and Gardiner Chief Curator, Meredith Chilton.
The
competition will promote the benefits of public art, and demonstrate
both the versatility of clay and its potential for outdoor art. It will
also build appreciation for artists who work in the ceramic medium and
encourage artists to experiment with it for the first time.
The
Gardiner is grateful to La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso for
commissioning the artwork and to the City of Toronto for their support
of the Ceramic Sculpture Competition, and would like to recognize
Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and Emmanuelle Gattuso, in particular, for
their leadership in helping this important civic initiative to proceed.
Who can apply?
This competition is open to Canadian artists who work in all mediums and reside in Canada. Artists may apply individually or can submit a collaborative team proposal, providing at least one artist resides in Canada. Artists directly involved with the Gardiner Museum are welcome to participate.
monday morning eye candy: Kari Radasch ~ Guest Post by Ceramic Artists Now
The joyful and cartoony work of Kari Radasch aids the mind of the viewer in creating their own unique experience. Her work is playful and exposes mistakes and marks, each piece being its own doodle, sketch, and work of art all at once.
Radasch infuses her pots with inspiration from old Hallmark cards, Copenhagen China, old-school Tupperware, cake, candy, and textiles. The result is delicious pottery that looks nearly edible, like a uniquely decorated cake fit for a child’s birthday party (one of those elaborate cakes made more to show off to the other parents than for the actual child).
Radasch has been known to work on mosaic house projects that are far more artistically developed than that of your average home-owner, redoing her kitchen backsplash and entire shower. When your life is a work of art, it is indeed reflected in your pots; Radasch’s pots are certainly full of life.
Radasch received her BFA from the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine and her MFA from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. She has been an NCECA emerging artist, Salad Days Resident at
Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts and spent a summer working at the esteemed Kohler Factory. On her website, Radasch generously shares all of her recipes and techniques for making. She is currently living in coastal Maine and teaching at the Maine College of Art.

Robin Hopper’s Swan Song
In the face of a diagnosis of terminal liver cancer, Robin Hopper
took on what he considers one of the most important projects of his
life. “Swansong” is two + hours of
memoir, musings, demos, a tour of his garden and much, much more. As his
final contribution to the ceramics community, Robin wants the impact of
Swansong to benefit children.
Programs For Youth and the Jimmy Fund, the pediatric wing of the Dana
Farber Cancer Institute. Please help insure Robin’s legacy of sharing

2016 Exhibition: October 14 to November 6, 2016.

Now in its 19th year, the Toronto Potters Biennial Exhibition
continues to be a leading event in our members’ calendars. We are again
partnering with the Gardiner Museum to bring our members and the public
the best of Toronto Potters’ work.
The Juried Show: will showcase and promote the best
sculptural and functional ceramics produced by Toronto Potters members.
Participants can submit up to 3 pieces which fall into either category:
“For Use” and ‘Of Expression”. Works juried into the show will be
selected based on their creative expression, originality as well as
technical merits, and will be eligible to win one of multiple awards.
These works will be displayed and sold in the Gardiner Museum Gift shop.
Entry fee: $45.00 plus updated membership.

The Survey Show: will coincide with an exhibition to be held at the Gardiner Museum, True Nordic: How Scandinavia Influenced Design in Canada
and is open to all members of Toronto Potters. Participants are
encouraged to submit 1 or 2 pieces designed in response to the ideas
and concepts of Scandinavian design which prioritizes functionality
without eliminating grace and beauty – minimalist, clean simple lines,
accessible.
The submissions for the Survey Show will be exhibited together in the
Gardiner museum lobby at the Biennial opening, and afterwards they will
be offered for sale at the Gardiner Museum Gift shop. Entry fee:

Ceramic Studio Practice and Arts Publishing Internship
Tandem Ceramics and Studio Potter are
combining forces to offer a dual internship in two different yet
congruent parts of the ceramics field: arts publishing and studio
practice.
The internship will be split into two sections: one half of the internship will be working with Studio Potter
editor, Elenor Wilson, assisting in publication production, archive
development, marketing and social media management, and membership
building; the second half will be working as a studio assistant under
Justine Barrett Figura of Tandem Ceramics, assisting in ceramic
production, market research, studio maintenance, and social media
development.
The ideal candidate is a student (undergrad or grad) or emerging
artist with an interest in any of the following: writing, editing,
pottery, ceramics, art history, studio management, pottery production,
slip casting, plaster mold making, documentation/marketing of work.
Experience in plaster mold making and slip casting highly preferred but
not required.
