The way I like to build my characters is by building them solid, hollowing them out in sections and then reattaching them back together. About Kristy: “My current body of work examines the systems and bonds between social, political, and personal narratives. These narratives intersect to embody forms of relativity, healing and resilience. By producing these physically paused moments, I introduce a space for reflection which investigates the journey of my personal point of view, individual habits and character.
My sculptures and prints are my thoughts made physical from studying the human condition and my reactions to the injustices brought to light in the recent months. As I thought about the I.C.E. raids, concentration camps, and prisons that directly affect Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities today, I began experimenting with combining personal photographs, screen printed elements, and lyrics in order to tell a story that others could possibly relate to. In the way that Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen often depicted the residents of San Francisco, I chose to portray Chico organizers along with my own fictional characters to actively visualize a future abundant in mutual aid. When combining ceramics and printmaking, I participate in recording historical events, spreading awareness and thus manifesting brighter futures based in science fiction such as writer adrienne maree brown does when explaining that all activism is a form of science fiction. In overcrowding these physical spaces with overlapping details, I acknowledge the clutter that inevitably distracts us from practicing empathy and acknowledging our own humanity.
Kristy Moreno was born in the city of Inglewood, California and often found herself creating doodles of her favorite cartoons. Moving to Orange County inspired her to become involved in the art communities of Santa Ana, leading her to collaborate with group collectives including We Are Rodents and Konsept. She then attended Santa Ana College where she found an interest in ceramics that led her to transfer to California State University, Chico to pursue a BFA degree. Her work now spans across mediums from ceramics, illustrations and printmaking to bring awareness and visibility to an abundant future where mutual aid is possible.

Position Summary
Reporting to the board of directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for the overall leadership and administration of The Bray, including artistic direction, strategic programming, business operations, financial management, fundraising, community engagement, and equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. The Executive Director will oversee the daily operations of the organization, providing leadership in the areas of program compliance, quality assurance, program efficiency, and fiscal integrity. They will manage staff and be responsible for the direction and execution of all programs, including artists in residence, visiting artists, education, exhibitions, sales gallery, and ceramic supplies.
The Executive Director will be actively in engaged in the world of contemporary ceramic art and will work to attract top artists. This person will activate their broad knowledge of and passion for ceramics and contemporary art to deepen the Bray’s global impact and build on its more than 70 years of success. Serving as The Bray’s primary ambassador to the local, national, and international clay community, the Executive Director will inspire excellence and provide leadership to ensure the resources, systems, and structures are in place to meet The Bray’s strategic goals and community needs. apprenticeship opportunity with Rusty Wheel Pottery
The Particulars:
In exchange for 18 hours a week of work around the studio you will receive 24 hour studio access to a 1500 sq. foot, lake front studio space, assistance with materials, access to kilns, critique and guidance on work/professionalism. Work would include general studio upkeep, building projects, loading kilns, community projects, teaching opportunities, packing and shipping work, photographing work, website upkeep and general PR, assistance in my own studio practice, gallery retail assistance, customer service, scheduling and appointment maintenance, and programming development . Housing is not included, though I do have connections to reasonably priced housing in the area. There are restaurants, coffee shops, etc. here in town for possible employment opportunities and Syracuse is only 20-30 minutes away containing many more options for both housing and employment. The studio will have a retail crafts gallery and foot traffic in town is steady, and selling work is available and encouraged if those options are fitting.
In March of 2022, Rusty Wheel Pottery will be making a move from its current location in Tully NY to Skaneateles NY, 20 miles to the west of Syracuse, occupying the space that Imagine Handmade, a family owned Handcraft gallery of 30 years currently lives, and will become Papavero Clay Studio, opening in April. I currently have 2 wheels, with plans to expand that, and plenty of hand building space. Extruders, Slab Roller, Pugmill, Large and small electric kilns are all located in the studio. Semi-private studio space will be provided for the apprentice, will full studio access available at all times. I consistently have a number of Ideas and plans for the year, this particular year will be jam packed, and am looking for someone out there who is interested in helping these plans grow to completion and beyond.
Ideally, the right candidate will have a BFA or MFA in ceramics or studio art, and a solid command of clay, clays properties, and processes. Teaching experience and interest is a strong plus, as running classes in the studio will be necessary, and good hand skills should be evident in your work as I will be looking for assistance in the studio with my own work. I ask for a letter of intent, resume, two letters of recommendation, and a portfolio of your current work. The Virginia A. Groot Foundation established the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant in 1988 so that a ceramic sculpture or sculpture artist may have the opportunity to devote a substantial period of time to the development of his or her work.
Eligibility: Each year the Virginia A. Groot Foundation offers grants to artists who have exceptional talent and demonstrated ability in ceramic sculpture or sculpture. Artists may be at any stage of career development, from emerging through mature. Applicants must be 21 years or older at the time of the application deadline.
